Age, personal and family history are independently associated with venous thromboembolism following acute Achilles tendon rupture

William M. Oliver et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the independent factors associated with symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) following acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) and suggest a VTE risk assessment tool for ATR patients. The results showed that age, personal history of VTE/thrombophilia, and family history of VTE were independently associated with VTE following ATR. Incorporating age into the VTE risk assessment tool enhanced its sensitivity in identifying at-risk patients. Non-weight-bearing for >= 2 weeks after ATR was also independently associated with VTE.

Summary: The study aimed to describe the epidemiology of Achilles tendon re-rupture, indicating a higher incidence in males and a rate of 1.16 per 100,000/year in adults. Most re-ruptures were low-energy injuries.

Summary: This nationwide study in South Korea analyzed the trend of Achilles tendon rupture incidence and surgical treatment, finding the highest incidence in patients aged 41 to 50 and higher rates in spring and summer seasons. Higher income levels were associated with increased rates of Achilles tendon injury.
