Shielding and internode effects of truss bridge on the aerodynamic characteristics of high-speed train under crosswinds

Ming Wang et al.

Summary: Accurately simulating the aerodynamic characteristics is crucial for the safety and stability of high-speed trains, especially when crossing wide rivers and valleys using long span highway-railway bridges. This study investigates the interference effects of truss bridges on high-speed trains, including the shielding effect and internode effect. The results show that truss bridges have both whole and local shielding effects on aerodynamic forces of trains, with the first effect causing a significant decrease at the entrance and the second effect leading to intermittent excitation.

Protective effect of railway bridge wind barriers on moving trains: An experimental study

Huoyue Xiang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the protective effect of wind barriers on moving head and tail train vehicles under crosswinds. The results indicate that wind speed, height, and porosity of the wind barriers significantly affect the protective effect. The wind speed reduction coefficient enables fast prediction of the vehicle overturning moment coefficient after the installation of a porous wind barrier.

On-board measurement of aerodynamic loads for high-speed trains negotiating transitions in windbreak walls

Lai Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamic response of a high-speed train under cross winds was investigated to identify the aerodynamic loads. A new measurement approach based on inertia and suspension loads was proposed, and a simplified load function was applied to vehicle dynamic simulations. The results showed that the overturning and derailment risks are closely related to the amplitude and frequency coefficients in the aerodynamic load waveform, emphasizing the importance of evaluating both risks for railway vehicles.

Global reliability analysis of running safety of a train traversing a bridge under crosswinds

Lidong Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a methodology for calculating the global reliability of the running safety of a train on a bridge under crosswinds using the probability density evolution method (PDEM)-based equivalent extreme value principle. The accuracy of the proposed methodology is verified through numerical examples, and the differences between the global reliability and single-wheel reliability, as well as the differences between time-dependent and time-independent reliabilities, are discussed in detail.

Comparative study on the wind characteristics of tunnel-bridge and tunnel-flat ground infrastructures on high-speed railway

Weichao Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducts continuous natural wind sampling on typical tunnel-bridge (TB) and tunnel-flat ground (TF) sites and compares the wind characteristics of the two sites. The results show that the prevailing wind direction on the TB site is affected by the occlusion effect, while the wind direction on the TF site is easily deflected by nearby obstacles. Additionally, the turbulence intensities are higher on the TF site and can be accurately described by a lognormal distribution. The von Karman spectrum accurately depicts the wind energy distribution in the frequency domain for both TB and TF sites.

Zhengwei Chen et al.

Summary: The aerodynamic and dynamic behaviors of a train near an elongated hillock beside a windbreak under crosswind were analyzed, revealing the sudden impact of the elongated hillock on the train and proposing a mitigation measure. A certain distance from the windbreak could effectively reduce the impact on the train.

Aerodynamic response of high-speed trains under crosswind in a bridge-tunnel section with or without a wind barrier

E. Deng et al.

Summary: The study shows that a wind barrier with a height of 3 meters and 30% porosity in the bridge-tunnel section can significantly weaken the sharp change effect of the aerodynamic coefficient of high-speed trains, thus reducing train safety. Additionally, the wind barrier can reduce the aerodynamic fluctuation amplitudes in the bridge-tunnel section and minimize the difference in pressure distribution in the longitudinal direction.

Experimental and simulation research on the aerodynamic effect on a train with a wind barrier in different lengths

Houyu Gu et al.

Summary: The length of the wind barrier has a significant influence on the aerodynamic characteristics of the head car, with lift force decreasing, lateral force increasing, and drag force approaching 0 as the barrier length increases. The lateral and drag forces of the head car remain relatively stable after a certain barrier length at specific yaw angles.

Full-scale tests of unsteady aerodynamic loads and pressure distribution on fast trains in crosswinds

Hongrui Gao et al.

Summary: This study conducted full-scale tests to investigate the influence of crosswinds on the aerodynamic loads of a fast streamlined train. The results showed that the mean values of aerodynamic load coefficients increased and then decreased with the yaw angle, reaching maximum values between 54.5 degrees and 59.6 degrees. The coefficients of variation of the aerodynamic load coefficients were approximately twice the turbulence intensity, indicating that the fluctuations were caused by wind speed oscillations. The dominant frequencies of the aerodynamic load coefficients were found to be at Strouhal numbers of 0-0.4.
