Endotheliopathy is associated with slower liberation from mechanical ventilation: a cohort study

Martin Schonemann-Lund et al.

Summary: Endotheliopathy biomarkers in acute respiratory failure are associated with lower rates of liberation from mechanical ventilation, hypoxemia at ICU admission, and 30-day all-cause mortality.

The glycocalyx core protein Glypican 1 protects vessel wall endothelial cells from stiffness-mediated dysfunction and disease

Marwa Mahmoud et al.

Summary: The study suggests that arterial stiffness promotes endothelial cell dysfunction and vascular disease at least partly by suppressing the glycoprotein Glypican 1. Glypican 1 contributes to protecting endothelial cells against dysfunction and vascular disease.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of Capillary Leak Syndrome (CLS) in surgical critical ill patients and its impact on mortality using a scoring system and machine learning models. It found that CLS patients had higher mortality rates and that auxiliary diagnostic methods could enhance clinical utility.

Endothelial Dysfunction in Fabry Disease Is Related to Glycocalyx Degradation

Solvey Pollmann et al.

Summary: Fabry disease, a multisystem lysosomal storage disease, is characterized by endothelial dysfunction possibly related to chronic inflammation. Treatment with enzyme replacement therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs can improve vascular health in patients with this condition.

Biomarkers of coagulation, endothelial function, and fibrinolysis in critically ill patients with COVID-19: A single-center prospective longitudinal study

Ganeem K. Juneja et al.

Summary: Immunothrombosis and coagulopathy in the lung microvasculature may lead to lung injury and disease progression in COVID-19. Biomarkers such as elevated D-dimer were associated with disease severity, while clot lysis time, sTM, PAI-1, and plasminogen levels may have predictive ability for mortality.

The Endothelial Glycocalyx as a Double-Edged Sword in Microvascular Homeostasis and Pathogenesis

Nuria Villalba et al.

Summary: The glycocalyx (GCX) on the endothelial cell surface of blood vessels plays important roles in regulating access to the endothelium, protecting barrier integrity, and controlling vascular tone. Recent perspectives highlight the pleiotropic roles of the endothelial GCX (eGCX) in cardiovascular health and disease, with potential diagnostic or prognostic values in certain pathological states. Pharmacological interventions targeting eGCX degradation are being explored, particularly in disease states where eGCX dysfunction contributes to severe inflammatory vasculopathy.

Glycocalyx Impairment in Vascular Disease: Focus on Inflammation

Jing Qu et al.

Summary: The glycocalyx plays a crucial role in inflammation and the development of vascular diseases, with endothelial dysfunction potentially leading to tissue swelling, chronic inflammation, and thrombosis. Eliminating endothelial inflammation may be a key target for treating vascular diseases. Research indicates that by disrupting the cycle of endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, the glycocalyx can help alleviate the progression of inflammation.

Bilateral simultaneous non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy: a rare complication of idiopathic systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS)

Yan Ning Neo et al.

Summary: This case study presents a 72-year-old man who developed bilateral symmetrical superior visual field defects during recovery from SCLS. Despite extensive fluid replacement and mechanical ventilation during acute illness, his visual field defect due to ischaemic optic neuropathy remained stable over 3 years, with good visual acuity. The mechanism of optic nerve infarction in this case is suspected to be related to hypercoagulability, hypovolemia, vascular disease, and hypertension.
