Effect of Plasma Bubbling on Textural and Engineering Properties of Ready-to-Eat Pearl Millet Flakes and Puffs

R. Lokeswari et al.

Summary: Air plasma treatment improved the flaking and puffing characteristics of pearl millet, resulting in increased crispiness and decreased hardness. The plasma treatment also led to an increase in the expansion volume and a decrease in the bulk density of the flakes and puffs, as well as a decrease in yellowness index and an increase in whiteness index.

Ozone as an alternative fumigant for controlling Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in cowpea beans

Artur Oliveira Abreu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the reaction kinetics of ozone gas in cowpea beans, determine its insecticidal activity against Callosobruchus maculatus adult insects, and assess grain quality after ozonation. The results showed that ozone gas effectively controls Callosobruchus maculatus without changing the grain quality.

Ozone: An Alternative Fumigant in Controlling the Stored Product Insects and Pests: A Status Report

Bhavadharini Boopathy et al.

Summary: Ozone is emerging as a promising fumigant for post-harvest storage of agricultural commodities, showing potential for effective control of insects and pests with mortality rates reaching 100% in most cases. The study also delves into the insect inactivation mechanism, mortality effects, challenges in bulk storage, and quality changes. A comparison with other chemical fumigants and techniques further confirms ozone's profound usage as a greener alternative.

Quality parameters and morphometric characterization of hot-air popcorn as related to moisture content

Santiago Garcia-Pinilla et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quality, physical, and morphometric parameters of corn kernels at different moisture contents after hot-air popping, and related them to their microstructural features. The optimal moisture content for hot-air popping was found to be 9.14%. Results showed similar roughness among different flakes at the macro level, while differences were observed at the microscale, indicating an analog multiscale behavior between roughness and microstructures of flakes.

Ozonation of Brazil Nuts in Aqueous Media at Different pH Levels: Ozone Decomposition, Aspergillus flavus Inactivation, and Effects on Nut Color and Crude Oil Lipid Profile

Wallas Felippe de Souza Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the decomposition kinetics of ozone in aqueous media containing Brazil nuts, investigate the inactivation of Aspergillus flavus by ozonation, and determine the changes in color and lipid profile of the nuts. The results showed that ozonation was more effective at controlling A. flavus in Brazil nuts when performed in an acidic pH environment. Additionally, while ozonation had an impact on the color of the nuts, it did not affect the fatty acid profile of the crude oil.

Efficacy of ozone for Callosobruchus maculatus and Callosobruchus chinensis control in cowpea seeds and its impact on seed quality

Hassan A. Gad et al.

Summary: Ozone showed significant insecticidal efficacy against Callosobruchus maculatus and Callosobruchus chinensis, resulting in a high adult mortality rate and a significant decrease in progeny production within 45 days. The highest ozone concentration provided the best protection for stored cowpea seeds and had minimal impact on the chemical composition of the seeds.

Vulnerability of different life stages of Sitophilus oryzae insects in stored rice grain to ozone treatment and its effect on physico-chemical properties in rice grain

Shubhangi Srivastava et al.

Summary: The study examined the insecticidal activity of ozone on different life stages of Sitophilus oryzae in stored grains. Adult stage of S. oryzae was found to be the least vulnerable to ozone treatment. Ozone-treated rice showed lower values of protein, amylose, and moisture content compared to fresh rice, with distinct microstructural changes.
