Role of copper alumina nanoparticles on the performance of polyvinylchloride nanocomposites

S. Suvarna et al.

Summary: Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) nanocomposites with different contents of copper alumina (Cu-Al2O3) nanoparticles were prepared and their structural, thermal, electrical, contact angle, and mechanical properties were thoroughly examined. The presence of Cu-Al2O3 nanoparticles in the PVC matrix was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed a higher crystallinity of the nanocomposites. SEM images revealed a change in the surface morphology of PVC due to the inclusion of nanofillers. DSC analysis showed an increase in the glass transition temperature with an increase in nanoparticle loading. The inclusion of nanofillers also improved the electrical properties, with the composite containing 7 wt.% sample showing the maximum conductivity and dielectric constant. The mechanical properties of the PVC nanocomposites, including modulus, tensile strength, hardness, and impact properties, were significantly enhanced by the reinforcement of nanoparticles. The highest mechanical and electrical properties were observed for the 7 wt.% Cu-Al2O3 loaded nanocomposite. Contact angle measurements indicated that the addition of Cu-Al2O3 nanofillers increased the hydrophobicity of the polymer matrix.

Effect of hybrid fillers on the mechanical behavior of polypropylene based hybrid composites

Ritika Sinha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of hybrid fillers, such as graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) and Titanium dioxide (TiO2), on the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites. The use of Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) as a compatibilizing agent helps increase the adhesion between the matrix and fillers. The experimental design, based on orthogonal array and Taguchi methods, allows for the analysis of performance characteristics using a small set of experiments. The results suggest that the optimal parameters for maximum tensile modulus and strength are 3 wt% GnPs, 2 wt% TiO2, and 6 wt% MAPP. ANOVA analysis identifies GnPs as the most significant parameter for these properties, followed by TiO2 and MAPP.

Enhanced optical, thermal and electrical properties of chlorinated natural rubber/zinc ferrite nanocomposites for flexible electrochemical devices

K. Parvathi et al.

Summary: This work investigates the optical, thermal stability, and temperature-dependent electrical properties of chlorinated natural rubber/zinc ferrite nanocomposites. The insertion of zinc ferrite into the rubber matrix leads to a decrease in bandgap energy. The nanocomposites exhibit enhanced thermal stability and electrical properties compared to the parent polymer. Additionally, the conductivity of the nanocomposites shows a non-ohmic behavior, indicating a dynamic relaxation process. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical models, suggesting the presence of interfacial interactions in the nanocomposites. These findings are significant for the development of highly-durable flexible electronic devices, actuators, supercapacitors, and elastomeric pressure sensors.

Compliant materials based on nickel oxide/chlorinated natural rubber nanocomposites

K. Parvathi et al.

Summary: This research article focuses on the preparation of chlorinated natural rubber (Cl-NR)/nickel oxide (NiO) nanocomposites using a simple and environmentally friendly two-roll mill mixing technique. The study demonstrates that increasing the nanofiller content improves the crystallinity, dispersion, glass transition temperature, and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. In addition, the nanocomposites show higher AC conductivity, dielectric loss, and dielectric constant compared to pure Cl-NR. The incorporation of the nanofiller also reduces the cure time, making the fabrication of rubber products more cost-effective. The study suggests that the nanocomposites with 5 phr NiO loading exhibit the best mechanical and electrical properties and can be used for the fabrication of electromagnetic induction shielding materials, conducting adhesives, and flame-resistant flexible electronic devices.

Mechanistic understanding of growth of nanorods in microemulsions

Nitin Yadav et al.

Summary: One-dimensional nanostructures have attracted significant attention due to their wide range of applications, and microemulsion-based reaction schemes provide a versatile and successful method for synthesizing such structures. CTAB-based quaternary reverse micelles have been shown to be an effective soft template for synthesizing nanorods with tailored structural characteristics. The growth mechanism of nanorods within the polar core of CTAB RMs requires a symmetry-breaking mechanism to operate, resulting in directional growth along the longitudinal axis and the formation of anisotropic structures. The proposed microemulsion-based heterogeneous growth mechanism has been validated for both slow and relatively fast kinetics of nanorod synthesis.

Summary: In this study, different concentrations of nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles were successfully incorporated into a polystyrene (PS) polymer matrix using the solution casting method. Various characterization techniques were used to analyze the nanocomposites, revealing a strong interaction between PS and NiO nanoparticles. Increasing the nanofiller content improved the absorbance of the nanocomposites and raised the refractive index values, indicating potential applications in photonic devices and optical design. Moreover, the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites was significantly enhanced due to the uniform dispersion of NiO nanoparticles and increasing content, achieving conduction through correlated barrier hopping (CBH).
