Low temperature synthesis and spark plasma sintering of a boron carbide with a low residual carbon content

Jonathan Kenny et al.

Summary: Using spark plasma sintering, >98.5% dense boron carbide samples were successfully fabricated from powders synthesized via a low temperature process. The synthesized powder showed lower levels of residual free carbon compared to commercially available samples, resulting in higher hardness values despite a coarser grain size. This improvement is believed to be due to the influence of ZrO2 and AlB2 impurities introduced during powder milling, rather than the lower carbon content.

An optimized method for synthesizing phase-pure Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase through spark plasma sintering

Mohammad Yunus et al.

Summary: Despite attempts to synthesize phase-pure Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase, the presence of TiC and Ti-Al based intermetallic impurities remains a challenge, with a lack of stability observed at temperatures above 1350 degrees C. This study presents an optimized method for producing phase-pure Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase with high purity using commercial grade Ti, Al, and C elemental powders through Spark Plasma Sintering technique, demonstrating good high temperature stability up to 1500 degrees C under flowing Argon inert atmosphere.

Influence of spark plasma sintering conditions on microstructure, carbon contamination, and transmittance of CaF2 ceramics

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: The experiment results showed that factors such as sintering temperature, pressure, and pre-loading pressure can affect the performance of CaF2 ceramics. Low sintering pressure and high sintering pressure can respectively reduce porosity and carbon concentration, achieving dense transparent ceramics.

A novel approach for processing CaAlSiON glass-ceramics by spark plasma sintering: Mechanical and electrical properties

Sharafat Ali et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of lithium-doped glassy materials for solid electrolytes or electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The spark plasma sintering technique (SPS) was shown to offer advantages in producing glass-ceramics, allowing for rapid heating rates and tuning of properties. Increasing the amount of Li in the glass matrix was found to increase crystallinity, while nano-indentation analysis demonstrated decreased hardness and reduced elastic modulus values with the addition of Li-ions.

Optimal preparation of high-entropy boride-silicon carbide ceramics

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of using borothermal and boro/carbothermal reduction methods in fabricating high-entropy boride-silicon carbide (HEB-SiC) ceramics. It was found that spark plasma sintering at 2000 degrees C could achieve HEB-SiC ceramics with > 98% theoretical density, and the addition of SiC resulted in slight coarsening of the microstructure. The results suggested that the choice of powder processing method and the inclusion of SiC phase could optimize the preparation of high-entropy boride-based ceramics.

Microstructural evolution of h-BN matrix composite ceramics with La-Al-Si-O glass phase during hot-pressed sintering

Baofu Qiu et al.

Summary: BN/La-Al-Si-O composite ceramics were fabricated by hot-pressed sintering using h-BN, La2O3, Al2O3, and SiO2. The presence of La-Al-Si-O liquid phase during sintering facilitated the growth of h-BN grains, while simultaneous cristobalite phase precipitation and h-BN grain growth at higher sintering temperatures significantly influenced densification and mechanical properties. Optimal mechanical properties were achieved at a sintering temperature of 1700 degrees C.

Improvement in mechanical properties in AlN-h-BN composites with high thermal conductivity

Zetan Liu et al.

Summary: The machinability of aluminum nitride-hexagonal boron nitride (AlN-h-BN) ceramics can be improved while maintaining high strength and thermal conductivity by incorporating up to 30 wt% BN as a secondary phase and using yttrium oxide as a sintering aid. The addition of sintering additives helps purify grain boundaries and enhance densification. The optimal BN content enhances flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite ceramics.
