Impact of Graphite Materials on the Lifetime of NMC811/Graphite Pouch Cells: Part II. Long-Term Cycling, Stack Pressure Growth, Isothermal Microcalorimetry, and Lifetime Projection

A. Eldesoky et al.

Summary: This article examines the impact of competitive graphite materials on the performance of NMC811 batteries. The choice of graphite greatly affects the battery's fade, while the charge capacity remains largely unchanged. Furthermore, batteries with artificial graphite have lower parasitic heat flow and minimal stack thickness change. The simulation suggests that these batteries can have decades-long lifetimes at specific temperature conditions.

High Temperature Testing of NMC/Graphite Cells for Rapid Cell Performance Screening and Studies of Electrolyte Degradation

T. Taskovic et al.

Summary: This article investigates the charge-discharge cycling of LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2/graphite cells with two different electrolytes at 70 degrees C. The results show that the degradation processes observed at 40 degrees C and 55 degrees C also occur at an accelerated rate at 70 degrees C. The dissolution of transition metals from the positive electrode is tracked using X-ray fluorescence studies. Elevated temperature testing at 70 degrees C is found to be a viable rapid screening technique for advanced electrolytes and advanced electrode materials.

Difluorophosphoric Acid Generation and Crossover Reactions in LiNixCoyMnzO2 Cathodes Operating at High Voltage

Chamithri Jayawardana et al.

Summary: Cycling lithium metal oxides to high potential can significantly increase the capacity and energy of lithium-ion batteries, but it also leads to rapid capacity fade. This study investigates the degradation of the anode solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and proposes acid-induced degradation as a primary source of capacity loss. The generation of difluorophosphoric acid (F2PO2H) is quantified and correlated with the thickening of the anode SEI and the increase in fluorophosphate content. The concentration of F2PO2H, anode SEI degradation, and capacity loss show a good correlation.

Experimental Confirmation of C-Rate Dependent Minima Shifts in Arrhenius Plots of Li-Ion Battery Aging

Maral Bozorgchenani et al.

Summary: Li-ion batteries exhibit the lowest rate of aging at a specific temperature, and this minimum shifts with the charging C-rate. The differences between cell types can be explained by the specific energy and anode coating thickness of the tested cells.

Mechanism of aluminum corrosion in LiFSI-based electrolyte at elevated temperatures

Chun-lei LI et al.

Summary: The study found that in LiFSI-based electrolytes, the dissolution of Al(FSI)3 leads to the formation of irregular, loose, and unprotected AlF3 materials, intensifying aluminum corrosion. However, the use of LiBOB can effectively inhibit Al corrosion, forming a robust protective layer, promoting the transition from AlF3 to LiF, and further enhancing interfacial stability.
