A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for quantifying squalane and squalene in aerosol emissions of electronic cigarette, or vaping, products

Elizabeth A. Cowan et al.

Summary: This article discusses the unknown inhalational toxicity chemicals found in electronic cigarette products, as well as the development of a quantitative method to measure squalene and squalane. Through testing 153 electronic cigarette products associated with cases, it was found that tetrahydrocannabinol products had high concentrations of squalene and squalane.

Developing inhaled drugs for respiratory diseases: A medicinal chemistry perspective

Elisa Pasqua et al.

Summary: Despite the devastating impact of many lung diseases on human health, there is still a significant unmet medical need in respiratory diseases, for which inhaled delivery represents a crucial strategy. When designing inhaled drugs, the medicinal chemist must carefully balance the physicochemical properties of the molecule to achieve optimal target engagement in the lung. Although the medicinal chemistry strategy is unique for each project, general guidelines aiding inhaled drug design can be applied.

Monitoring peppermint washout in the breath metabolome by secondary electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry

Jiayi Lan et al.

Summary: In this study, the real-time exhaled metabolome of ten subjects who ingested a peppermint oil capsule was profiled using a SESI-HRMS system. The system showed good reproducibility, and metabolites of peppermint oil were successfully detected in breath samples.

Confined DART-MS for Rapid Chemical Analysis of Electronic Cigarette Aerosols and Spiked Drugs

Thomas P. Forbes et al.

Summary: A confined direct analysis method using DART-MS was developed to rapidly analyze aerosols from electronic cigarettes without sample preparation. The system allows for direct chemical analysis of aerosolized electronic liquids, spiked illegal drugs, and contaminants in under 30 seconds, providing a streamlined tool for screening illicit and hazardous chemical profiles emitted from electronic cigarettes.
