A Strategy for Simultaneously Improving Resolution and Sensitivity of Hybrid Quadrupole Ion Trap/Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Using Square Waveform Phase Modulation

Yixue Cao et al.

Summary: The study showed that a square waveform phase modulation strategy can improve the resolution and sensitivity of QIT/TOFMS by optimizing the phase angle. The best performance was observed at specific phase angles, leading to significant enhancements in mass resolution and signal intensity for certain m/z values.

On the relationships between resolution, dimensionless stability, pseudopotential well depth, acceptance, and transmission in mass filters

Adam P. Huntley et al.

Summary: The relationships between resolution, stability, pseudopotential well depth, acceptance aperture, and transmission for sinusoidal quadrupole mass filters are analyzed. The study reveals simple linear or power relationships. Pseudopotential well depth is found to be directly proportional to the product of dimensionless stability well depth and the AC voltage. Ion transmission and sensitivity also scale directly with the pseudopotential well depth. Operating in higher stability zones leads to increased resolving power and pseudopotential well depth for all types of mass filters.

Implementing Digital-Waveform Technology for Extended m/z Range Operation on a Native Dual-Quadrupole FT-IM-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer

Jacob W. McCabe et al.

Summary: This study presents a digital-waveform dual-quadrupole mass spectrometer to improve the performance of a drift tube FT-IMS high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer in studying large proteins and protein complexes. The dual-quadrupole analyzer allows for low-energy collisional activation of ions and precise mass selection using digital-waveform technology, enhancing the capabilities of the instrument at a lower cost compared to traditional RF drivers.
