Acridine-Functionalized Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) as Photocatalysts for Metallaphotocatalytic C-N Cross-Coupling

Michael Traxler et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous and crystalline polymers constructed through the covalent attachment of small organic building blocks. This study reports the synthesis of a new family of COFs using an acridine linker and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde derivatives, and their application as photocatalysts in metallaphotocatalytic C-N cross-coupling reactions, exhibiting high activity and good yields.

Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Photoinduced Copper-Catalyzed Asymmetric Acylation of Allylic Phosphates with Acylsilanes

Yusuke Ueda et al.

Summary: We present a copper-catalyzed enantioselective umpolung allylic acylation reaction under visible light. The reaction involves the use of acylsilanes as acyl anion equivalents and is supported by triplet-quenching experiments and DFT calculations. The reaction mechanism involves a charge-separated triplet state intermediate generated by copper-to-acyl metal-to-ligand charge transfer photoexcitation.

Versatile Palladium-Catalyzed Approach to Acyl Fluorides and Carbonylations by Combining Visible Light- and Ligand-Driven Operations

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: We have developed a general palladium-catalyzed method to synthesize acyl fluorides from different types of compounds. Mechanistic analysis suggests that the reaction proceeds through the combination of visible light photoexcitation of Pd(0) with a ligand-favored reductive elimination, resulting in a unidirectional catalytic cycle. Coupling this catalytic method with nucleophilic reactions allows for a broad range of carbonylation reactions, including the synthesis of highly functionalized products.

Min He et al.

Summary: The self-assembled aggregates of 7,10-dibromo-2,3-dicyanopyrazinophenanthrene serve as a new organophotocatalyst in combination with Ni catalyst for the C-aryl-O-acyl cross-coupling reactions of carboxylic acids with aryl halides. This visible-light-induced reaction leads to the formation of aryl esters with satisfactory to excellent yields.

Exogenous Ligand-Free Nickel-Catalyzed Carboxylate O-Arylation: Insight into NiI/NiIII Cycles

Lukas A. Wolzak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanistic examination of carboxylate O-arylation under thermal conditions and provides insights into the competition between productive and deleterious pathways in the commonly proposed self-sustained Ni-I/Ni-III catalytic cycle. The spectroscopic studies reveal the resting state of the nickel catalyst and the crucial role of alkylamine base in the reaction process. The study highlights the need to choose between mild conditions or equimolar ratios of substrates for productive nickel-catalyzed carboxylate O-arylation.

A visible-light activated secondary phosphine oxide ligand enabling Pd-catalyzed radical cross-couplings

Takahito Kuribara et al.

Summary: Ligand design plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of light-enabled catalytic processes. In this study, the authors synthesized a visible-light-activated secondary phosphine oxide ligand and applied it to Pd-catalyzed radical cross-coupling reactions. Through molecular design aided by computational calculations, the ligand enables ligand-to-Pd(II) and Pd(0)-to-ligand single-electron transfer under visible-light irradiation, facilitating radical cross-coupling reactions.

Coupling of Alternating Current to Transition-Metal Catalysis: Examples of Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling

Evgeniy O. Bortnikov et al.

Summary: The coupling of transition-metal to photoredox catalytic cycles through single-electron transfer steps has become a powerful tool in the development of catalytic processes. AC-assisted Ni-catalyzed reactions showed higher yields and selectivity, and mechanistic studies highlighted the importance of both reduction and oxidation processes in these reactions. The AC assistance appears to be well-suited for catalytic cycles involving reductive elimination or oxidative addition as a limiting step.
