Tuning the redox potential of tyrosine-histidine bioinspired assemblies

Emmanuel Odella et al.

Summary: Photosynthesis is a key source of power for the planet, and understanding the redox activity of the tyrosine Z-histidine 190 pair in Photosystem II can inspire the design of artificial constructs mimicking natural energy transducing processes.

Molecular Principles of Redox-Coupled Protonation Dynamics in Photosystem II

Friederike Allgower et al.

Summary: Photosystem II (PSII) catalyzes light-driven water oxidization and we found that it uses a redox-triggered proton transfer mechanism for water oxidation. This mechanism resembles functional motifs in other enzymes involved in biological energy conversion, modulating the catalytic barriers for water oxidation.

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Guidelines, Fair and Square

Robin Tyburski et al.

Summary: Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions play a fundamental role in energy transformation reactions and are increasingly important in catalysis and synthetic chemistry. The interplay between proton and electron transfer leads to a richness of reactivity, with various sequential and concerted mechanisms. Understanding and distinguishing between different PCET mechanisms is crucial for the design and optimization of reactions utilizing PCET.

Models to study photoinduced multiple proton coupled electron transfer processes

Walter D. Guerra et al.

Summary: Two dyads inspired by the P680-Yz-H190 redox relay of photosystem II are described. They have different hydrogen bond frameworks, which is predicted to alter the photoinduced PCET mechanism. In non-polar solvents, only one isomer is detected in the dyad having the extended hydrogen bond network highlighting the stabilizing effect of multiple hydrogen bonds.

Multi PCET in symmetrically substituted benzimidazoles

Emmanuel Odella et al.

Summary: The study shows that using a benzimidazole system with two identical TPAs as substitutions can build an uninterrupted intramolecular hydrogen bond network, facilitating two-proton translocations. NMR data and infrared spectroelectrochemistry results confirmed the proton transfer and stability of the system.
