A Two-Pathway Model for the Evolution of Colloidal Compound Semiconductor Quantum Dots and Magic-Size Clusters

Yang Li et al.

Summary: A fundamental understanding of formation pathways is critical to controlled synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals. An unconventional, selective approach and a two-pathway model have been developed to decouple the evolution of ultrasmall quantum dots (QDs) and magic-size clusters (MSCs). Manipulation of precursor compounds enables synthesis of different types of nanocrystals, which is significant for the development of nucleation theory and synthesis of nanomaterials.

The precursor compound of two types of ZnSe magic-sized clusters

Xingxia Yang et al.

Summary: The study introduced a type of ZnSe precursor compounds that can be transformed into two different magic-sized clusters with the assistance of additives at room temperature. The additive diphenylphosphine played a crucial role in inhibiting thermal decomposition and reducing by-products in the reaction, providing new insights into the synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles.

Room-Temperature Evolution of Ternary CdTeS Magic-Size Clusters Exhibiting Sharp Absorption Peaking at 381 nm

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the first synthesis of colloidal semiconductor ternary CdTeS magic-size clusters (MSCs) at room temperature is presented, and the evolution pathway is investigated. The CdTeS MSC-381 is shown to evolve from its precursor compound (PC) via quasi-isomerization. The study provides insights into the room-temperature evolution of ternary MSCs and the transformation from PC to MSC.

Multiscale hierarchical structures from a nanocluster mesophase

Haixiang Han et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the spontaneous hierarchical self-organization of nanometre-scale subunits to form higher-level complex structures. By using monodisperse Cd37S18 magic-size cluster building blocks, highly aligned structures are obtained, which mimic the complex constructions seen in nature. This research provides a platform for the design of synthetically directed advanced materials with sophisticated functions.

A Real-Time In Situ Demonstration of Direct and Indirect Transformation Pathways in CdTe Magic-Size Clusters at Room Temperature

Chaoran Luan et al.

Summary: This study challenges the assumption that transformations of colloidal semiconductor magic-size clusters (MSCs) occur with only discrete, step-wise redshifts in optical absorption. With conclusive evidence provided by real-time experiments, it is revealed that the transformations can exhibit continuous and/or step-wise behavior, with some transformations following others. The findings encourage a reconsideration of absorption redshift in previous studies of binary II-VI MSCs transformations without an increase in cluster mass.

Unraveling the Growth Mechanism of Magic-Sized Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Aniket S. Mule et al.

Summary: The study investigates the growth mechanism of semiconductor magic-sized clusters, with a particular focus on CdSe nanocrystals. By synthesizing a series of gradually increasing magic-sized nanocrystals and developing a microscopic model, it reveals the layer-by-layer growth mechanism of zinc-blende crystallites and the source of special stability in these nanocrystals. The analysis also identifies strong similarities with the growth of semiconductor nanoplatelets, and exploits this to further increase the size range of magic-sized nanocrystals.

Transformations Among Colloidal Semiconductor Magic-Size Clusters

Li He et al.

Summary: Understanding colloidal semiconductor magic-size clusters (MSCs) is crucial for grasping the evolution of fundamental properties from individual molecules to semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The two-step approach allowed for engineering MSCs as a sole product at room temperature, demonstrating first-order reaction kinetics behavior in their evolution. Further research is needed to gain a more precise understanding of the transformation processes of these magic species.
