The effects of fire and seasonal variations on soil properties in Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb. stands in the Alborz Mountains, Iran

Nasim Bagheri Delijani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fire and seasonal variations on soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities in Juniperus excelsa stands in the southern slopes of Iran's Alborz Mountains. The results showed that fire increased the organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus contents of the soil, as well as the activities of acid phosphatase and urease enzymes. However, fire did not affect soil texture, bulk density, pH, electric conductivity, or other enzyme activities. Soil chemical properties varied significantly across sampling seasons.

Land use and site effects on the distribution of carbon in some humic soil profiles of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Ntwanano Moirah Malepfane et al.

Summary: Land use affects the stocks of soil organic carbon, with subsoil horizons potentially containing more protected carbon than topsoil layers. In South Africa, humic soils have high organic carbon in the A horizon, but the carbon stocks throughout the soil profile depth are unknown. Cultivation reduces soil organic carbon, and soils with thick humic A horizons and coarser texture store more carbon in deeper layers, while soils with thin humic A horizons and finer texture store more carbon in the 0-20 cm depth.

Paddy soils have a much higher microbial biomass content than upland soils: A review of the origin, mechanisms, and drivers

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: Research shows that microbial biomass content in paddy soils is higher than in upland soils due to factors such as higher root C input by rice plants, lower oxygen availability, higher microbial C assimilation efficiency, and additional C stabilization on iron (oxyhydr)oxides in paddy soils. Despite higher temperatures and better water availability, microbial turnover is slower in paddy soils due to oxygen limitation, leading to nearly double the microbial biomass content compared to upland soils.

Effects of sugarcane substrate inputs on microbial biomass and nitrogen availability in tropical sandy soils of northeast Thailand

Walaiphan Chuwongpanich et al.

Summary: The selection of different types and quantities of substrates can optimize soil nitrogen availability to plants and carbon storage, affecting microbial growth, nitrogen mineralization, and carbon stabilization. Sugarcane residue, leaf litter, and humic acid additions have different effects on soil microbial biomass and nitrogen availability, with implications for soil fertility and biofuel production efficiency.

Assessing the effects of harvesting with and without burning and vinasse application in sugarcane crops: Evaluation of soil fertility and phosphorus pools in different ethanol production systems

Jose de Souza Oliveira Filho et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different sugarcane management systems on soil fertility and phosphorus accumulation, finding that the application of vinasse increased K+ and higher lability inorganic P content, while straw retention on the surface reduced pH and increased potential acidity. The moderately labile fraction of organic and inorganic P played a significant role in total P content of soil, potentially serving as an important reserve of phosphorus for crops.

X-ray micro-computed tomography characterized soil pore network as influenced by long-term application of manure and fertilizer

Navdeep Singh et al.

Summary: This study utilized X-ray microtomography to investigate the long-term effects of cattle manure and fertilizer application on soil pore structure under corn-soybean rotation. The results showed that the application of manure significantly increased soil organic carbon content and porosity compared to the control group, leading to improved saturated hydraulic conductivity. The study also highlighted the importance of using X-ray microtomography to quantify soil pore structure and indicated the benefits of long-term application of dairy manure on improving the microscopic soil physical environment.
