Landslides, hurricanes, and sediment sourcing impact basin-scale erosion estimates in Luquillo, Puerto Rico

Summary: This study examined the temporal variability of cosmogenic isotopes Be-10 in river sand from different watersheds in Puerto Rico and found that major landscape disturbing events such as landslides can lower Be-10 concentrations in the sand, impacting the accurate inference of long-term erosion rates.

End member and Bayesian mixing models consistently indicate near-surface flowpath dominance in a pristine humid tropical rainforest

Christian Birkel et al.

Summary: The study assessed runoff generation mechanisms in a pristine tropical rainforest catchment using end member mixing analysis (EMMA) and a Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR). Results showed that streamflow was predominantly sourced from near-surface waters. In the main stream, shallow soil water had the highest contribution, while the two tributaries were more influenced by shallow soil water.
