Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Management in Pregnancy

Kathryn H. Dao et al.

Summary: Family planning is important for women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Pregnancy may lead to disease flares and adverse outcomes. Disease control and the use of safe medications prior to conception are recommended. Aspirin can reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia.

Atypical and Rare Forms of Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus: The Importance of the Diagnosis for the Best Management of Patients

Astrid Herzum et al.

Summary: Lupus erythematosus (LE) is an autoimmune disease with a wide range of clinical and cutaneous manifestations. Some cutaneous manifestations are rarer, but still characteristic, enabling dermatologists and general practitioners to suspect cutaneous LE (CLE) and investigate possible systemic involvement. Skin manifestations can often be the initial presentation of systemic LE (SLE), with over 75% of SLE patients showing signs of skin disease. Acute CLE cases commonly involve SLE, while it is less common in subacute CLE and rare in chronic CLE. This review focuses on atypical cutaneous manifestations of LE to aid clinicians in diagnosing even the rarest forms of CLE.

Cutaneous Manifestations of Lupus: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Beyond

Elizabeth E. Cooper et al.

Summary: Lupus, a term used to describe various dermatologic conditions, can be related to systemic lupus erythematosus or other distinct disease processes. Differentiation of cutaneous lupus subtypes through physical exam, laboratory studies, and histopathology is crucial for informing treatment and disease monitoring. Proper classification and treatment are essential for addressing the different manifestations of lupus erythematosus.

Depleting plasmacytoid dendritic cells reduces local type I interferon responses and disease activity in patients with cutaneous lupus

Jodi L. Karnell et al.

Summary: Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are specialized in producing IFN and regulating immune responses, with persistent activation in autoimmune diseases. VIB7734, a monoclonal antibody, effectively depletes pDCs, reduces IFN activity, and improves clinical disease activity in animal models and patients. Biomarker analysis suggests that VIB7734 may be more effective in individuals with high baseline IFN activity, supporting further development in IFN-associated diseases.

The prevalence of oral mucosal lesions and related factors in systemic lupus erythematosus patients

Mayssoun Kudsi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in patients with SLE and found a significant relationship between oral lesions and factors such as oral hygiene status, duration of disease involvement, frequency of pregnancies, daily use of corticosteroids, and medications used for SLE treatment other than corticosteroids. Age, sex, cigarette smoking, and medications other than those used for SLE treatment were not significantly related to the presence of oral lesions.
