Investigating the relationship between internal short circuit and thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries under thermal abuse condition

Dongsheng Ren et al.

Summary: Thermal runaway, a critical issue in the application of lithium-ion batteries, is a thermalelectrical coupled process where exothermic chemical reactions and internal short circuit coincide. This study investigates the relationship between internal short circuit and thermal runaway under thermal abuse conditions, finding the limited contribution of internal short circuit to thermal runaway. The results provide new insights into battery thermal runaway mechanism and safety design.

Lithium distribution and transfer in high-power 18650-type Li-ion cells at multiple length scales

Dominik Petz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of lithium inside electrodes of a commercial Li-ion battery using neutron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray computed tomography on different length scales. The evolution of lithium distribution in lithiated graphite during charge/discharge process, as well as the cell organization and lithiation details, were obtained with high spatial resolution techniques. In-situ lithiation of the cathode and lithium concentration front development during cell charge/discharge were traced using diffraction-based profiling with micrometer-sized synchrotron beam.

Non-destructive local degradation detection in large format lithium-ion battery cells using reversible strain heterogeneity

Ruihe Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of reversible strain heterogeneity as a non-destructive tool for local degradation analysis of large format lithium-ion battery cells. Post-mortem analysis revealed that gas bubbles produced by severe side reactions between graphite particles and electrolyte, as well as heat in regions with high impedance, were responsible for abnormal expansion and sudden capacity drop in aged unconstrained cells. The quick spread of defective regions led to the sudden capacity drop, confirming the usefulness of reversible strain distribution in monitoring battery degradation.

A study of cell-to-cell variation of capacity in parallel-connected lithium-ion battery cells

Ziyou Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the capacity variation among battery cells and demonstrates that the capacity variation decreases over time for cells with similar temperatures, providing a self-balancing mechanism. Additionally, it is found that battery strings with initial cell-to-cell capacity variation degrade slightly faster compared to those with uniform cell capacities.
