Optimizing the performance of meta-polybenzimidazole membranes in vanadium redox flow batteries by adding an alkaline pre-swelling step

Chanho Noh et al.

Summary: Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is a promising material for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) membranes due to its low vanadium ion permeability and high conductivity. However, pre-swelling the membrane in alkaline solution can significantly enhance its conductivity, leading to improved electrochemical performance in sulfuric acid.

Tailoring the vanadium/proton ratio of electrolytes to boost efficiency and stability of vanadium flow batteries over a wide temperature range

Yongbin Liu et al.

Summary: Reducing the V/H ratio in the electrolyte can lead to higher efficiency and better cycle stability, especially suitable for a wide range of temperatures. Unlike previous studies that focused on increasing vanadium concentration to increase theoretical capacity density, a relatively low vanadium concentration is more suitable for vanadium flow batteries as it allows for safer, cheaper, and more stable operation, which is crucial for large-scale energy storage.

Superior acidic sulfate ester group based high conductive membrane for vanadium redox flow battery

Bo Pang et al.

Summary: The study introduces sulfate ester group as a novel proton conductive group to achieve high proton transport at lower IECs, addressing the trade-off between vanadium crossover and conductive ion diffusion. The sulfate ester group has lower proton binding energy, leading to higher proton dissociation ability and better micro-phase separation. In tests, batteries with sulfate ester group showed high energy efficiency and stability in H2SO4 / vanadium environment.
