Recent Advances in the Development of Fire-Resistant Biocomposites-A Review

Summary: Biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers are an eco-friendly and inexpensive alternative to petroleum-based materials. However, their high flammability limits their applications. The use of flame-retardant additives can improve their fire resistance. This study discusses the flammability of wood and natural fibers as material resources and the use of lignin as a flame-retardant additive to produce high-performance biocomposites.

The physical and chemical characteristics of the lignin were analyzed, revealing the effects of fractionation on lignin morphology. These findings have important implications for the industrial application of lignin in manufacturing improved wood-based composites.
