Catalytic Kinetics Regulation for Enhanced Electrochemical Nitrogen Oxidation by Ru-Nanoclusters-Coupled Mn3O4 Catalysts Decorated with Atomically Dispersed Ru Atoms

Zhongfen Nie et al.

Summary: In this study, Ru-nanoclusters-coupled Mn3O4 catalysts were designed and explored for ambient N-2 oxidation, showing excellent catalytic performance. Both experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the presence of Ru clusters and single-atom Ru is the reason for the outstanding activity, which effectively activates the chemically inert N-2 in synergy with Mn3O4.

Perspectives on the Competition between the Electrochemical Water and N2 Oxidation on a TiO2(110) Electrode

Ebrahim Tayyebi et al.

Summary: The electrochemical nitrogen oxidation reaction (NOR) is a promising alternative route for directly synthesizing nitrate from N2(g). However, the understanding of NOR and its competing processes, such as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), on TiO2(110) electrodes under ambient conditions is limited. In this study, a computational investigation combining grand canonical density functional theory with the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation was conducted to explore the kinetics of NOR and OER. The results reveal that the occurrence of OER can either promote or suppress NOR, depending on the reaction conditions. This detailed atomistic understanding offers potential for further developments in direct electrochemical NOR processes.

Electrosynthesis of Nitrate via the Oxidation of Nitrogen on Tensile-Strained Palladium Porous Nanosheets

Shuhe Han et al.

Summary: Nitrate is an essential raw material in agriculture and industry, but the electrochemical nitrogen oxidation reaction (NOR) shows potential to replace traditional nitrate synthesis with high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Tensile-strained palladium porous nanosheets (Pd-s PNSs) were found to have enhanced activity for electrochemical NOR, outperforming Pd nanosheets. Experiments with N-15 isotope labeling confirmed that nitrate originates from nitrogen oxidation.

Three-Dimensional Carbon Electrocatalysts for CO2 or CO Reduction

Hao Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigates 3D carbon electrocatalysts as potential CO2RR electrocatalysts through density functional theory simulations and proposes a molecular-level engineering strategy. Results show that the introduction of a second metal center in diporphyrin molecules can produce CH4 and C-2 species, while coordination catalysts with pyridine can generate CH3OH and enable C-C coupling to form C-2 species.

Ru-Doped Pd Nanoparticles for Nitrogen Electrooxidation to Nitrate

Tieliang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, Ru-doped Pd materials were prepared for electrocatalytic nitrogen oxidation, with the optimized Pd0.9Ru0.1 sample showing superior performance over pure Pd and Ru. Experimental and theoretical simulations indicate that Ru doping promotes the formation of more active species and changes the potential-limiting step with a lower energy barrier.

Ammonia and Nitric Acid Demands for Fertilizer Use in 2050

Jeonghoon Lim et al.

Summary: Access to nitrogen-based fertilizers is crucial for maximizing agricultural yield, but the production process contributes significantly to carbon emissions. The market size and value of ammonia and nitric acid will be heavily influenced by the growing global population and food demand over the next three decades. Developing carbon-free technologies for nitrogen and nitrate reduction to meet fertilizer manufacturing demands is essential to address the environmental impact of current production methods.

Electrochemical Nitric Oxide Reduction on Metal Surfaces

Hao Wan et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the selectivity and activity of metal catalysts for NOx electroreduction, with copper showing selective NH3 formation by binding *NO but not *H. Metals that do not bind NO stop the reaction at NO, similar to CO2-to-CO conversion. At higher potentials, a low barrier for N coupling with NO may lead to N2O formation.

Electrocatalytic fixation of N2 into NO3-: electron transfer between oxygen vacancies and loaded Au in Nb2O5-x nanobelts to promote ambient nitrogen oxidation

Yintong Zhang et al.

Summary: A hybrid electrocatalyst composed of Au nanoparticles and oxygen vacancy-enriched niobium oxide nanobelts was prepared on niobium foil for N-2 fixation into NO3-. Electron transfer between Au nanoparticles and oxygen vacancies in Nb2O5-x nanobelts was found to adjust the electronic structures near the interface, suppressing the competitive OER activity and enhancing the NOR performance of the electrocatalyst.

Electrochemical oxidation of molecular nitrogen to nitric acid - towards a molecular level understanding of the challenges

Megha Anand et al.

Summary: This work discusses the possible reaction mechanisms of electrochemical N-2 oxidation (N2OR) and its competition with the parasitic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the molecular level. The author suggests design strategies for N-2 oxidation electro-catalysts by comparing the performance of two catalysts and establishes trends/scaling relations to correlate OER and N2OR activities. The challenges associated with electrochemical N2OR are highlighted.

From the Birkeland-Eyde process towards energy-efficient plasma-based NOX synthesis: a techno-economic analysis

Kevin H. R. Rouwenhorst et al.

Summary: Plasma-based NOX synthesis via the Birkeland-Eyde process was one of the early industrial nitrogen fixation methods, but it never dominated the field due to the invention of the Haber-Bosch process. However, recent interest in plasma technology for nitrogen fixation has resurged with the availability of low cost, renewable electricity. Energy consumption for NOX synthesis with plasma technology is currently competitive with the commercial process, but further optimization is needed to achieve full competitiveness through effective plasma-catalyst coupling.
