Low-Temperature C-H Bond Activation: Ethylbenzene-to-Styrene Conversion on Rutile TiO2(110)

Yuemiao Lai et al.

Summary: The low-temperature C-H bond activation of alkanes is a challenging process in alkane dehydrogenation. This study investigates the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene on rutile(R)-TiO2(110) under ultrahighvacuum (UHV) and ambient conditions. The results suggest that the initial step of EB oxidative dehydrogenation differs under UHV and ambient conditions, leading to different product distributions. The findings provide new insights into the fundamental understanding of low-temperature C-H bond activation and can contribute to the development of efficient catalysts for styrene production.

Photocatalytic C-H Bond Activation of Toluene on Rutile TiO2(110)

Fangliang Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the photochemistry of toluene on a TiO2 catalyst, and found that ultraviolet light can efficiently activate the methyl C-H bond of toluene, forming stable intermediate adsorbed on specific sites until around room temperature. The DFT calculations further revealed that the photocatalytic C-H bond cleavage follows a homolytic manner. These findings provide insights into the photocatalytic functionalization of hydrocarbons on TiO2 catalysts.

Optimally Selecting Photo- and Electrocatalysis to Facilitate CH4 Activation on TiO2(110) Surface: Localized Photoexcitation versus Global Electric-Field Polarization

Min Zhou et al.

Summary: Photo- and electrocatalytic technologies show promising potential in activating inert chemical bonds, but selecting the most suitable method remains a challenge. In this study, the activation mechanisms for C-H bond of CH4 on TiO2(110) surface under different catalytic modes were compared using first-principles calculations. It was found that photoexcitation can significantly decrease the activation barrier of the C-H bond, while the external electric field has only a limited effect. In the presence of water, the electrocatalytic activation of CH4 can be facilitated indirectly by the oxidative water cleavage.

C-O versus C-C Bond Cleavage in Ethylene Glycol Photochemistry on Rutile TiO2(110): Selectivity Depends on Excess Electrons

Yinuo Li et al.

Summary: Excess electrons play an important role in determining the bond cleavage selectivity in surface reactions on transition metal oxides, as demonstrated in a study using ethylene glycol on rutile-TiO2 surfaces. This finding has implications for understanding selectivity in photocatalytic reactions.

A selective Au-ZnO/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst for oxidative coupling of methane to ethane with dioxygen

Shuang Song et al.

Summary: The study presents a highly efficient and selective photo-oxidation method for the direct conversion of methane to ethane using a Au nanoparticle (NP) loaded ZnO/TiO2 hybrid. This method achieves an ethane production rate of over 5,000 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with 90% selectivity, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than current state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the formation of heterojunctions between ZnO and TiO2, while the Au cocatalyst facilitates C2H6 formation and inhibits overoxidation of CH4 to CO2.

A Highly Selective Metal-Free Boron-Based Catalyst for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene

Yue-Ran Wang et al.

Summary: The metal-free boron-based catalyst of boron phosphate and boron nitride (BPO4/BN) showed high activity and selectivity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene, achieving a styrene selectivity of 95.1% at a 27.7% ethylbenzene conversion level. The tetra-coordinated boron species of BPO4 and a synergistic effect between BPO4 and BN were speculated to significantly improve the catalytic performance of the BPO4/BN catalyst, surpassing the individual performance of BPO4 and BN catalysts.

Cooperative Sites in Fully Exposed Pd Clusters for Low-Temperature Direct Dehydrogenation Reaction

Linlin Wang et al.

Summary: Direct dehydrogenation of alkanes poses a significant challenge in activating C-H bonds at low temperatures. This study reports fully exposed Pd clusters on a hybrid nanodiamond-graphene support for efficient dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene, demonstrating superior catalytic performance and stability compared to previous catalysts. The synergetic interaction between adjacent Pd atoms in each cluster enables effective activation of C-H bonds on ethyl, leading to higher activity than typical Pd single atom and Pd nanoparticle catalysts.
