Hierarchical Core-Shell ACOF-1@BiOBr as an Efficient Photocatalyst for the Degradation of Emerging Organic Contaminants

Ahmed E. ElMetwally et al.

Summary: A hierarchical coreshell structure of nanostructured ACOF-1@BiOBr was prepared and its performance in the degradation of organic contaminants under light irradiation was demonstrated. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ACOF-1@BiOBr system can be attributed to the synergy between ACOF-1 and BiOBr, which form a Type-II heterostructure that reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers. The ACOF-1@BiOBr system also exhibited enhanced generation of superoxide radicals.

C3N4Impregnated with Porphyrins as Heterogeneous Photocatalysts for the Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-Furfural Under Solar Irradiation

Elisa I. Garcia-Lopez et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) under natural solar irradiation was carried out using heterogeneous photocatalysts containing metal-free or metal-porphyrin complexes supported on carbon nitrides. The presence of porphyrin improved the visible light absorption, leading to selective oxidation of HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxyaldehyde (FDC). The pH level was found to affect the photocatalytic activity and selectivity of the samples.

Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Diformylfuran by Visible Light-Driven Photocatalysis over In Situ Substrate-Sensitized Titania

Ayesha Khan et al.

Summary: Selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was achieved by visible light-driven photocatalysis over titania. The formation of a visible light-absorbing complex of HMF on the titania surface enabled efficient catalysis of the oxidation of HMF to DFF under visible light.

Cu2S@Bi2S3 Double-Shelled Hollow Cages as a Nanocatalyst with Substantial Activity in Peroxymonosulfate Activation for Atrazine Degradation

Ahmed E. ElMetwally et al.

Summary: In this study, a multistage templating approach was used to prepare Cu2S@Bi2S3 double-shelled cages, which exhibited efficient degradation of atrazine in the dark. The synergy between Cu2S and Bi2S3 in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) led to enhanced catalytic performance by promoting radical generation. Mechanistic studies revealed hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen as the dominant species generated during atrazine degradation.

Cu2O Cubes Decorated with Azine-Based Covalent Organic Framework Spheres and Pd Nanoparticles as Tandem Photocatalyst for Light-Driven Degradation of Chlorinated Biphenyls

Ahmed E. ElMetwally et al.

Summary: By loading azine-based COF spheres onto Cu2O cubes and decorating them with palladium nanoparticles, an efficient photocatalytic hybrid material was developed for the degradation of chlorinated biphenyls. The congener with a para chlorine atom was found to be more vulnerable to degradation due to increased conjugation between the phenyl rings induced by the electron-donating effect of the chlorine atom, leading to enhanced planarity and easier removal of the chlorine atom. The data also showed that nucleophilic substitution at the para position had the lowest Gibbs free energy, while substitution at the ortho position had the highest Gibbs free energy.

Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with low ON1-doping content as efficient photocatalysts for organic pollutant degradation

Yan Huang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that g-C3N4 nanosheets doped with 2.16% oxygen content in the O-N1 position showed the highest photocatalytic activity in degrading Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation, with a degradation rate of 99%. This improvement in degradation was attributed to the reduced oxygen content of O-N1-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets, as opposed to normal O-N2-doping.

C-, N-Vacancy defect engineered polymeric carbon nitride towards photocatalysis: viewpoints and challenges

Abhinandan Kumar et al.

Summary: Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4; GCN) is a metal-free polymeric semiconductor material with fascinating physicochemical and photoelectronic structural features, yet its wide-range applicability is limited by inherent drawbacks such as rapid reassembly of photocarriers and low specific surface area. Introducing vacancies into the framework of GCN to generate 0D point defects has shown potential in manipulating optical absorption, radiative carrier isolation, and surface photoreactions. Various advanced strategies for controlled designing of vacancy-rich GCN have been explored, highlighting the significance of defect engineering on optical absorption, charge isolation, and surface photoreaction ability in GCN. Applications of defect engineered GCN include photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 conversion, N-2 fixation, pollutant degradation, and H2O2 production.
