Mapping Surface Chemistry During Superfilling with Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

David Raciti et al.

Summary: This study used silica shell-isolated Au nanoparticles as reporters for Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SHINERS) measurements to track and map the coverage and state of surfactant additives during electrochemical deposition. The study revealed the effect of different surface geometries on the coverage of sub-monolayer coatings.

Visualizing Eigen/Zundel cations and their interconversion in monolayer water on metal surfaces

Ye Tian et al.

Summary: The nature of hydrated proton on solid surfaces has been visualized using cryogenic qPlus-based atomic force microscopy. Eigen cations self-assemble into monolayer structures with local order, while Zundel cations form long-range ordered structures stabilized by nuclear quantum effects. It is found that Zundel configuration is preferred over Eigen on Pt(111), but such preference is absent on Au(111).

Surface Hydride Formation on Cu(111) and Its Decomposition to Form H2 in Acid Electrolytes

Brian M. Tackett et al.

Summary: The study reveals that on Cu(111) surface, the redox wave of hydride formation coincides with anion desorption, and the reverse reaction yields H-2 instead of H3O+. Additionally, two-dimensional hydride formation can be characterized through reduction wave and specific vibrational bands.

Dynamic Interfacial Reaction Rates from Electrochemistry-Mass Spectrometry

Kevin Krempl et al.

Summary: The study introduces a mathematical framework based on a mass transport model to obtain a quantitative and truly dynamic partial current density from measured mass spectrometer signal by deconvolution. The time resolution of electrochemistry-mass spectrometry is limited by entropy-driven processes during mass transport to the mass spectrometer. The methodology is validated by comparing measured impulse responses of hydrogen and oxygen evolution to model predictions and applied to uncover dynamic phenomena during hydrogen and oxygen evolution in an acidic electrolyte.
