Entropy of Branching Out: Linear versus Branched Alkylthiols Ligands on CdSe Nanocrystals

Orian Elimelech et al.

Summary: The surface ligands of semiconductor nanocrystals play a crucial role in their colloidal stability and physicochemical properties. In this study, the impact of the ligand chain backbone structure on the thermodynamics of the exchange reaction for oleate coated CdSe NCs was investigated. The results showed that branched ligands have lower exothermicity and entropy loss compared to linear ligands, due to steric hindrance in ligand packing. The findings suggest that a short, branched ligand with a short branching group located toward the middle of the ligand chain is the most entropic ligand.

Thermodynamics of the Adsorption of Cadmium Oleate to Cadmium Sulfide Quantum Dots and Implications of a Dynamic Ligand Shell

Jason J. Calvin et al.

Summary: Adsorbed surface ligands play a crucial role in the chemical and physical properties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, especially their optical properties. In this study, tetrahydrofuran was used as a coordinating solvent to create a dynamic ligand equilibrium, allowing the measurement of the adsorption energy of cadmium oleate on the surface of cadmium sulfide quantum dots. Quantum chemical calculations and Ising-model-based simulations were also employed to investigate the thermodynamics and interligand interactions of the quantum dot surface. The effects of a dynamic ligand shell on the optical properties of quantum dots were explored, suggesting that a static ligand shell provides higher quantum yields.

Luminescent Quantum Dots Stabilized by N-Heterocyclic Carbene Polymer Ligands

Liang Du et al.

Summary: N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-modified ligands were tested for coordinating and stabilizing luminescent CdSe-ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) in hydrophilic media. The coordination of NHC ligands onto QDs was found to be rapid and effective, leading to enhanced long-term colloidal stability and changes in optical and spectroscopic properties of the nanocrystals, including red-shift in absorption and fluorescence spectra and intensity changes under different storage conditions.

Ligand Adsorption Energy and the Postpurification Surface Chemistry of Colloidal Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystals

Shalini Singh et al.

Summary: The study investigates the binding of a single ligand to CdSe and CdS nanocrystals, revealing that CdS nanocrystals bind more cadmium oleate and are more resistant to displacement by butylamine compared to CdSe. Density functional theory simulations predict a higher cadmium oleate displacement energy for CdS, which influences the displacement equilibrium constant for both types of nanocrystals after purification.

Combined NMR and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Investigation Resolves Conditions for Ligand Exchange and Phase Transformation in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Sakiru L. Abiodun et al.

Summary: The thermodynamics of ligand-mediated phase transformation of CsPbBr3 NCs using DDAB were investigated, revealing two processes: facile ligand exchange displacing native ligands, and exothermic displacement of PbBrx complexes from NC surfaces leading to 2D phase formation. These findings help reconcile conflicting conclusions in prior studies and could aid in intentional formation of composite structures for selected applications.
