Molecular interactions from the density functional theory for chemical reactivity: Interaction chemical potential, hardness, and reactivity principles

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana et al.

Summary: In the first paper of this series, the authors derived an expression for the interaction energy between two reagents using density functional perturbation theory. They also introduced the |d mu| big is good rule and the maximum hardness principle as simpler explanations for reactivity. Expressions for the change in chemical potential and hardness during reagent interaction were derived. A partial justification for the maximum hardness principle is the presence of opposite-sign terms in the interaction energy and hardness expressions.

Charge transfer at finite temperature: The |Δμ| big is good principle

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana

Summary: We demonstrate that the principle of "vertical bar Delta mu vertical bar big" holds at finite temperatures. We also introduce conditions suggesting the validity of this reactivity rule when involved chemical reactions exhibit different signs in their chemical potential variations.

Understanding specific ion effects and the Hofmeister series

Kasimir P. Gregory et al.

Summary: Specific ion effects (SIE) have been studied for over 130 years and are observed in various fields. However, there is currently no general theory to explain ion specificity. This review explores the historical explanations for SIE in water, the properties of key ions, and the behavior of ions at the liquid-vapor interface. It also discusses SIE in mixed electrolytes, nonaqueous solvents, and highly concentrated electrolyte solutions, which are exciting frontiers with relevance to biological and electrochemical applications. The article concludes by summarizing the challenges and opportunities in SIE research and the potential for a general predictive theory.

Can the Lewis Basicity of an Isolated Solvent Molecule be Used for Characterizing Solvent Effects?

Jean-Francois Gal et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the role of Lewis basicity at the molecular level and solvent effects. The results demonstrate the importance of distinguishing between the basicity of solute molecules and that of the bulk liquid solvent when considering Lewis basicity effects.

Calculation of donor numbers: Computational estimates for the Lewis basicity of solvents

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana et al.

Summary: Donor numbers are crucial for classifying Lewis basicity of solvents. A theoretical framework has been proposed for their calculation, which shows high agreement with experimental values and highlights the importance of local molecular interactions. Simplified chemical reactions were used to examine different levels of approximations, with even the simplest approaches providing reasonable results.

Reactivity and Charge Transfer Beyond the Parabolic Model: the |Δμ| Big is Good Principle

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana et al.

Summary: This paper discusses an extension of the Parr-Pearson parabolic charge transfer model with third order effects, and provides new arguments supporting the validity of the |Δμ| big is good (DMB) principle proposed by Parr and Yang. It also demonstrates how to re-derive this principle from the Parr-Pearson parabolic model using simpler arguments than previously presented.

Electronic Properties of Protein Destabilizers and Stabilizers: Implications for Preferential Binding and Exclusion Mechanisms

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic properties of low-weight organic co-solutes using conceptual density functional theory calculations, revealing the significance of certain chemical reactivity descriptors in classifying protein stabilizers and destabilizers. Stabilizers exhibit lower chemical hardness and Lewis basic properties, while destabilizers show higher chemical hardness and Lewis acidity. Analytical calculations of transfer energies highlight the crucial role of co-solute-protein interactions in altering the interaction pattern of stabilizing or destabilizing species.

Specific Ion Effects in Different Media: Current Status and Future Challenges

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana et al.

Summary: The article discusses the current state and future challenges of researching the specific properties of ions in bulk electrolyte solutions. Although some insights have been provided, many mechanisms for these simple media remain unknown. Emphasis is placed on the importance of local interactions and electronic properties, as well as future research on dynamic properties.

Enthalpies of Adduct Formation between Boron Trifluoride and Selected Organic Bases in Solution: Toward an Accurate Theoretical Entry to Lewis Basicity

Jean-Francois Gal et al.

Summary: The study examined the Lewis basicity of organic bases by modeling the enthalpies of adduct formation between gaseous BF3 and bases in DCM solution. Results showed that DCM played an important role as a solvent, influencing the enthalpy values of the reaction, with specific solvation being a key factor.

Beneficial properties of solvents and ions for lithium ion and post-lithium ion batteries: Implications from charge transfer models

Ramon Alain Miranda-Quintana et al.

Summary: The study investigates the solvation properties of standard lithium salts in various aprotic apolar solvents using conceptual density functional theory. It is found that commonly used solvents like propylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate favor the solvation of the lithium ion. Furthermore, the solvation of standard anions does not significantly contribute to the total solvation energy.
