Anomalous weathering trends indicate accelerated erosion of tropical basaltic landscapes during the Permo-Triassic warming

Jianghai Yang et al.

Summary: Weathering of basalt in tropical environments is sensitive to climate change, as indicated by a significant decrease in weathering intensity during the Permo-Triassic transition despite climate warming trends. The massive erosion in the Early Triassic is likely linked to amplified extreme precipitation associated with intensification of the hydrological cycle in the Early Triassic hothouse climate. This study highlights the weathering responses of tropical landscapes to rapid climate warming.

Elemental geochemical evidence for controlling factors and mechanisms of transitional organic matter accumulation: The upper Permian Longtan Formation black shale in the Lower Yangtze region, South China

Jianghui Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and accumulation mechanisms of transitional organic matter (OM) in the marine-continental transitional shale of the upper Permian Longtan Formation in South China. The results reveal the complex paleoenvironmental conditions and propose an integrated model for transitional OM accumulation.

Neoproterozoic postglacial paleoenvironment and hydrocarbon potential: A review and new insights from the Doushantuo Formation Sichuan Basin, China

Di Xiao et al.

Summary: The Neoproterozoic period is a significant record of glacial-postglacial paleoenvironments, organic carbon cycling, and hydrocarbon accumulation. Sediments from this period generally have the potential for hydrocarbon generation, with marine transgression influencing organic matter abundance through paleo-productivity and anoxia. The findings in the Sichuan Basin suggest potential for oil and gas exploration in certain depocenters of the Doushantuo Formation sediments.

Geochemical Characteristics and Sedimentary Environment of the Upper Permian Longtan Coal Series Shale in Western Guizhou Province, South China

Lingyun Zhao et al.

Summary: The Longtan coal series shale in western Guizhou Province, South China has a high total organic carbon content, indicating it is a good to excellent hydrocarbon source rock. The organic matter in this shale is multiorigin, mostly from terrestrial higher plants. The sedimentary environment of this shale is dominated by suboxic-anoxic freshwater environment, facilitating the preservation of organic matter.

Micro-structural Damage to Coal Induced by Liquid CO2 Phase Change Fracturing

Zhiwei Liao et al.

Summary: The technology of liquid carbon dioxide phase change fracturing (LCPCF) was used to enhance the permeability of coal seams. LCPCF had mechanical damage effects on coal micro-structures to varying degrees. HP-MIP results showed that LCPCF mainly affected pores of > 100 nm within coal and resulted in the increase in the number of macro-pores and micro-fractures.

Systematics and palaeoecology of fossil plants from the Upper Permian Longtan Formation in western Guizhou Province, southwestern China

Chaokun Luo et al.

Summary: The Shuicheng flora, collected from western Guizhou Province in southwestern China, is an important part of the late Permian Cathaysian flora. Systematic taxonomic studies of the fossil plants show dominance of ferns and pteridosperms, with palaeoecological reconstruction indicating they thrived under warm and humid conditions, contributing to the terrestrial landscape in western Guizhou Province.

Felsic volcanism as a factor driving the end-Permian mass extinction

Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: Felsic volcanic activities made significant contributions to the end-Permian environmental changes, causing extreme copper and mercury enrichments and potentially leading to rapid cooling degrees before or synchronously with global warming. The new geochemical data suggest that the Siberian Traps large igneous province may not have been the sole trigger for the end-Permian mass extinction.

Upwelling-induced organic matter enrichment of the Upper Permian Dalong Formation in the Sichuan Basin, SW China and its paleoenvironmental implications

Yamin Yu et al.

Summary: This study reveals the vertical variation in organic matter enrichment of the Upper Permian Dalong Formation in the northern Sichuan Basin, which was related to the expansion of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean induced transgression and upwelling in the northern continental margin of the Upper Yangtze. The differences in types and strength of the upwelling result in the variation of paleoproductivity and redox conditions, and thus the organic matter abundance in the sedimentary rocks.
