Deciphering myriapoda population dynamics during Gondwana deglaciation cycles through neoichnology

Renata G. Netto et al.

Summary: This study investigates the biogenic structures generated by extant myriapods to better understand the record of Diplichnites gouldi and other related traces in the Late Carboniferous Itarare Group, as well as the population dynamics of Myriapoda in ancient glacial settings. By conducting controlled neoichnological experiments, the morphometric traits and preservation potential of crawling traces produced by Chilopoda and Diplopoda individuals were analyzed, revealing information about size variability and ontogeny. The results suggest that in the topmost rhythmites of the Itarare Group, different size classes found in D. gouldi likely represent ontogeny rather than a diversity of tracemakers due to the low diversity of myriapods in glacial settings and the short colonization window.
