Upstream migration of avulsion sites on lowland deltas with river-mouth retreat

Jiaguang Li et al.

Summary: The study uses a low-gradient river delta formed on the edge of a lake in the Qaidam Basin, China, as a natural laboratory to explore how lowland deltas will respond to river-mouth retreat from accelerated relative sea-level rise. The results indicate that as the lake water area increases, the river mouth will retreat, and the avulsion sites will migrate upstream accordingly, potentially exposing new upstream communities to flood risks.

Recent sedimentary processes in the Atrato River Delta - Colombia based on physicochemical characterization of surface sediments

Liliana Betancurth et al.

Summary: The study investigates modern sedimentation in the Atrato River Delta through analyzing sediment samples for grain size, mineral abundances, chemical weathering, and concentrations of major and trace elements. The results indicate a decreasing sediment size pattern towards the bays, with varying transport regimes and a dominance of quartz in mineralogy. High concentrations of oxides suggest oxidation processes with moderate to high weathering.

Sedimentary stratigraphy of Lake Chalco (Central Mexico) during its formative stages

Rodrigo Martinez-Abarca et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Lake Chalco formed in four stages, including alluvial delta, fluvial deltaic environment, fluvio-lacustrine transition, and the formation of a deep eutrophic lake. This provides insights into the lake's formation process, the impact of volcanic activity, and the prevailing climatic conditions during its development.

Ecological turnover in neotropical freshwater and terrestrial communities during episodes of abrupt climate change

Liseth Perez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that Heinrich Stadial 5-1 was characterized by cold and dry conditions, leading to lower ostracode and vegetation species richness and diversity; while the slightly warmer and dry conditions during HS6 and HS5a were associated with higher ostracode species richness and diversity. Ostracodes showed larger and more rapid community changes compared to vegetation.

Evaluation of Lake Sediment Thickness from Water-Borne Electrical Resistivity Tomography Data

Johannes Hoppenbrock et al.

Summary: Lakes serve as archives of past climate and ecological changes, with sediment records at the lake bottom holding valuable information. While reflection seismic methods are commonly used to explore and characterize sediment layers, they may not always provide a comprehensive image of lake-bottom sediments due to various factors. A complementary method based on water-borne electrical-resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements has been developed and tested to improve sediment thickness estimates and complement standard lake-bottom exploration methods.

Paleo-ecological changes and sedimentary evolution of the Hainan Delta, NW South China Sea

Jinpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study of the Hainan Delta core reveals four stages of delta development supported by factors such as grain size, dinoflagellate cysts, and diatoms. The organic matter is a mixture of terrigenous and marine sources, with rapid mineralization leading to high abundance of dinoflagellate cysts. The rarity of fossil diatoms can be attributed to high dilution and lateral transport processes.

The Holocene record of Alberca de Tacambaro, a tropical lake in western Mexico: evidence of orbital and millennial-scale climatic variability

Beatriz Ortega-Guerrero et al.

Summary: The laminated sediments in a core from Alberca de Tacambaro in western central Mexico provide a high-resolution record of palaeoclimatic variability for most of the Holocene. By analyzing 14 facies classified in biogenic, clastic and volcaniclastic groups, along with high-resolution geochemical data, the study identifies three main phases in the sequence controlled by millennial-scale variability.

Sedimentary characteristics and evolution process of the Huangqiao sand body in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Yu Cheng et al.

Summary: The study examines the sediment cores from the Huangqiao sand body in the Yangtze River Delta and identifies four depositional systems, with the stratigraphic architecture and origin mainly controlled by Holocene sea-level changes. The Huangqiao sand body, dated between 7.5 and 4 ka, is not an estuarine sand body but a sand body formed in a tide-dominated delta, providing new evidence for interpreting the origin and evolution of the Yangtze River Delta.

Environmental changes during MIS6-3 in the Basin of Mexico: A record of fire, lake productivity history and vegetation

L. R. Martinez-Abarca et al.

Summary: The study found that the Basin of Mexico responded differently to orbital changes from late MIS 6 to MIS 3, including lake productivity, vegetation, and fire events. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction showed that in the past, wetter periods were often accompanied by dry conditions, low forest cover, and low fire activity; while under high spring insolation, the environment suddenly shifted from wet to dry, leading to increased forest cover and fire activity.
