Antifungal Resistance in Clinical Isolates of Candida glabrata in Ibero-America

Erick Martinez-Herrera et al.

Summary: There is variability in the rates of resistance to antifungal agents in Candida glabrata in different regions worldwide. Limited data are available on the antifungal resistance in C. glabrata in Ibero-America. A systematic review was conducted to determine the antifungal resistance in C. glabrata in this region over the last five years. The use of azoles and echinocandins varied among different countries. The limited information emphasizes the need for species identification and antifungal susceptibility tests to prevent the development of antifungal resistance.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis in Iran: A systematic review and meta-analysis on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, demographic characteristics, risk factors, etiologic agents and laboratory diagnosis

Elahe Sasani et al.

Summary: This study is the first to determine the prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis in Iranian women through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis among Iranian women was 47%, with Candida albicans being the most prevalent etiologic agent. The use of oral contraceptive pills was identified as the predominant risk factor for developing vulvovaginal candidiasis, and vaginal cheese-like discharges were the predominant clinical manifestation in Iranian women with this condition.

Molecular identification and antifungal susceptibility profiles of Candida dubliniensis and Candida africana isolated from vulvovaginal candidiasis: A single-centre experience in Iran

Gholamreza Shokoohi et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed molecular epidemiological data on the occurrence of Candida africana and Candida dubliniensis in Iranian patients with VVC or RVVC. The antifungal activity of two new drugs, efinaconazole and luliconazole, is also assessed for the first time. The results show that C africana and C dubliniensis have low MIC values for most antifungal drugs, especially for EFN and LUL, highlighting their remarkable antifungal activity.

Genetic Analysis of Candida glabrata from Candiduric Patients Using Microsatellite Length Polymorphism, Antifungal Susceptibility, and Enzymatic Profiles

Maral Gharaghani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to detect different genotypes of C. glabrata isolates using microsatellite markers and MLP technique. It found a high genetic diversity among the urinary C. glabrata isolates in Iran. The main virulence factors identified were hemolysin and proteinase, with some isolates showing resistance to certain antifungals.

Summary: The study compares the frequency and in vitro sensitivity profile of Candida species isolated in the vaginal content among asymptomatic, VVC, and RVVC patients. It was found that less common species were present in the RVVC group. Most isolates were sensitive to antifungals, but exhibited lower sensitivity to caspofungin.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence, virulence, risk factors, and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis. Risk factors identified included vaginal discharge, burning complaint, and history of allergy. Candida albicans was the most common isolated strain, followed by C. glabrata, with varying virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility rates.

Extreme diversification driven by parallel events of massive loss of heterozygosity in the hybrid lineage of Candida albicans

Veronica Mixao et al.

Summary: Candida albicans is the most commonly reported species causing candidiasis, with controversial taxonomic classification and potential hybrid origin with Candida africana. Recent genomic analyses suggest a shared hybrid origin of C. albicans and C. africana, with parallel massive loss of heterozygosity in C. stellatoidea as in C. africana.
