Quantitative characterization of frank loops and their effects on the plastic degradation in heavy ion irradiated alloy 800H

Zhenbo Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the irradiation tolerance and plastic degradation of Alloy 800H in molten salt reactors were investigated. The microstructure changes were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, and the plastic mechanical properties were determined through nanoindentation testing. The results showed that the characteristics of Frank loops can be used to calculate the yield stress contribution, and increasing loading rates led to a decrease in the measured yield stress.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism underlying the ultrahigh irradiation hardening in niobium (Nb) was investigated using in-situ testing, microscopy, and theoretical analysis. The results showed that the irradiated Nb pillar exhibited a significant increase in yield stress, and it was observed that He bubbles in Nb promoted dislocation nucleation and multiple slip systems.

Xuxiao Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the irradiation response of FeCrAl oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel, showing that zirconium-added FeCrAl ODS steel has higher irradiation hardening capability, while non-ODS steel T91 exhibits the strongest irradiation hardening. The irradiation defects in ODS steel specimens are significantly smaller than those in T91.

Proton irradiation assisted localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in 304 nuclear grade stainless steel in simulated primary PWR water

Ping Deng et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the irradiation dose promoted localized corrosion at the slip step and grain boundary in irradiated 304 nuclear grade stainless steel, primarily due to strain concentration induced by enhanced localized deformation and depletion of Cr at grain boundary. The synergic effect of enhanced localized deformation and localized corrosion at the slip step and grain boundary caused a higher cracking susceptibility in the irradiated steel.

Interaction mechanism of an edge dislocation with a void in Fe-Ni-Cr concentrated solid-solution alloy

Yan-Kun Dou et al.

Summary: The interactions between a 1/2 <110> {111} edge dislocation and a void in Fe10Ni20Cr and Fe33Ni33Cr concentrated solid-solution alloys were studied using molecular dynamics simulation. It was found that the dislocation motion becomes more difficult in Fe33Ni33Cr alloy due to larger fluctuations in stacking fault energy compared to Fe10Ni20Cr alloy. However, Fe33Ni33Cr alloy exhibits better irradiation hardening resistance than Fe10Ni20Cr alloy, especially at high temperatures.

Irradiation hardening of stainless steel model alloy after Fe-ion irradiation and post-irradiation annealing treatment

K- Fukumoto et al.

Summary: After irradiation with Fe ions, significant irradiation hardening and subsequent recovery were observed in the stainless steel model alloy, mainly attributed to Ni-Si clusters and Frank loops. The dense formation of Ni-Si clusters plays a controlling role in the behavior of irradiation hardening.

Phase-field simulation of Cu enriched nanoparticles with variation of defects migration energy under neutron irradiation

Shahid Maqbool et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that radiation-enhanced diffusion is influenced by the migration energy of vacancy, with low migration energy accelerating precipitation and the combination of lowest dose rate and highest migration energy delaying precipitation. Additionally, the migration energy of vacancy affects the radius of Cu precipitates, increasing it up to one-third for the lowest migration energy.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.

Investigation of 8 zirconium hydride morphology in a single crystal using quantitative phase field simulations supported by experiments

P-C A. Simon et al.

Summary: In light water nuclear reactors, waterside corrosion of the cladding material results in the formation of hydrogen, which precipitates into brittle hydride particles in zirconium cladding. A phase field model has been developed to predict the observed hydride morphology and identify the mechanisms responsible for the stacking of nanoscale hydrides in zirconium grains. The model challenges some previously proposed mechanisms for hydride reorientation under applied stress.

Effect of helium bubbles on irradiation hardening of additive manufacturing 316L stainless steel under high temperature He ions irradiation

Chonglong Fu et al.

Summary: The effects of irradiation on SLM 316L SS and TM 316L SS were studied by ion irradiation, showing that SLM 316L SS exhibited higher resistance to irradiation hardening due to lower density of helium bubbles compared to TM 316L SS. The differences in microstructures, such as entangled dislocation network walls and subgrain boundaries, play a key role in reducing the density of helium bubbles in SLM 316L SS.
