Standardized mortality ratios in multiple sclerosis: Systematic review with meta-analysis

Natasha Smyrke et al.

Summary: The study indicates that people with multiple sclerosis have a reduced overall survival and an increased risk of death, particularly from cardiovascular, respiratory and infectious diseases, accidents, and suicide. This situation does not seem to have changed over the past 65 years.

Cancer Incidence and Mortality Rates in Multiple Sclerosis A Matched Cohort Studyy

Ruth Ann Marrie et al.

Summary: In a study comparing cancer risk in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and those without MS using population-based data, it was found that the incidence of breast and colorectal cancers did not significantly differ between the two groups, while bladder cancer risk was increased in the MS cohort. Differences in the incidence of some cancers among MS patients may be attributed to ascertainment differences rather than actual disparities.

Association of Age at Onset With Gray Matter Volume and White Matter Microstructural Abnormalities in People With Multiple Sclerosis

Raffaello Bonacchi et al.

Summary: In patients with multiple sclerosis, younger individuals are initially more resilient to brain damage, but compensatory mechanisms eventually fail, leading to loss of white matter integrity, followed by gray matter atrophy and ultimately disability.

Effects of Age and Disease Duration on Excess Mortality in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis From a French Nationwide Cohort

Fabien Rollot et al.

Summary: The study found that in multiple sclerosis (MS), current age has a stronger impact on mortality rates than disease duration, especially in relapsing onset (RMS) patients, while the respective effects of these factors are less clear in primary progressive (PPMS) patients.

Summary: This study found that the time to diagnosis and treatment initiation in CIS patients with MS has significantly decreased across different diagnostic criteria periods. Patients diagnosed in recent periods had a lower risk of reaching disability milestones compared to those diagnosed in earlier periods.

End of life in multiple sclerosis: Disability, causes and place of death among cases diagnosed from 1981 to 2010 in Pirkanmaa hospital district in Western Finland

Annukka Murtonen et al.

Summary: The study examined the needs for end of life care in MS patients by analyzing causes, place of death, and level of hospitalization before approaching death. Results showed that high disability and immobility among patients likely led to infections as the most common cause of death. The majority of deaths occurred in central or university hospitals, with no significant difference in place of death between age groups.
