Amyloid processing in COVID-19-associated neurological syndromes

Oliver J. Ziff et al.

Summary: Patients with COVID-19 neurological syndromes show impaired amyloid processing, increased neuronal injury, and neuroinflammation, while astrocyte activation is reduced.

Cerebrospinal fluid analysis in patients with COVID-19-associated central nervous system manifestations: a systematic review

Renan Barros Domingues et al.

Summary: A systematic review of CSF findings in patients with acute COVID-19 and CNS syndromes reveals that non-specific inflammatory CSF abnormalities are frequently observed. Increased white blood cells and/or protein concentration are common in patients with encephalitis. Positive CSF RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 is only found in a small percentage of cases. Furthermore, over 85% of patients show elevated CSF cytokines and chemokines.

Routine laboratory parameters, including complete blood count, predict COVID-19 in-hospital mortality in geriatric patients

Fabiola Olivieri et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the performance of selected routine laboratory biomarkers in predicting in-hospital mortality in elderly COVID-19 patients. The results showed that certain parameters, such as neutrophilia and lymphopenia, had high predictive values for in-hospital mortality.

Circulating neurofilament is linked with morbid obesity, renal function, and brain density

Summary: Circulating levels of NfL and GFAP can reflect neuronal damage in obese patients. NfL may be a feasible biomarker of cerebral function even in apparently neurologically healthy subjects.

Renal Function and Body Mass Index Contribute to Serum Neurofilament Light Chain Levels in Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

Alexandros A. Polymeris et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between renal function, BMI, and sNfL in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation. The results showed that both renal function and BMI were associated with sNfL, but renal function explained a larger proportion of sNfL variance.

Serum neurofilament light chain levels in Covid-19 patients without major neurological manifestations

Federico Verde et al.

Summary: This study found that neuroaxonal damage, indicated by increased sNFL levels, is present in Covid-19 patients even without major neurological manifestations, potentially influenced by systemic inflammation.

Neurofilament light chain concentration in an aging population

Aurelie Ladang et al.

Summary: In this study, we assessed the concentration of neurofilament light chain (NF-L) in the serum of 409 community-dwelling adults aged over 65 years. We found that NF-L concentration was associated with kidney function, age, and body mass index (BMI). Subjects with self-reported neurological disorders had higher NF-L concentration. Furthermore, NF-L concentration was also associated with cognitive impairment but not with depression. It is important to interpret NF-L measurements with caution, especially in patients with renal failure.

Serum neurofilament light chain in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy

Tomohiro Hayashi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate whether serum NfL levels can serve as a biomarker of disease activity and treatment response in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). Results showed that baseline sNfL levels in CIDP patients before treatment were significantly higher than those in healthy controls, and these levels decreased significantly after treatment.

Serum neurofilament light protein correlates with unfavorable clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Mercedes Prudencio et al.

Summary: Brain imaging studies of COVID-19 patients have shown evidence of neuroaxonal injury, and serum levels of neurofilament light chain (NFL) may predict the extent of neuronal damage and are associated with clinical outcomes. Lower NFL serum concentrations were observed in COVID-19 patients treated with remdesivir, suggesting that neuroaxonal injury should be considered as an outcome in acute pharmacotherapeutic trials for COVID-19.
