Glucose sparing by glycogenolysis (GSG) determines the relationship between brain metabolism and neurotransmission

Douglas L. Rothman et al.

Summary: This study provides a mechanistic explanation for the proportional relationship between glucose metabolic fluxes in neurons and astrocytes in the brain. The findings suggest that glycogenolysis plays a crucial role in neuronal glucose metabolism and energy supply.

Critical Role of Astrocytic Polyamine and GABA Metabolism in Epileptogenesis

Zsolt Kovacs et al.

Summary: Astrocytes play an important role in regulating normal and epileptiform activity through the uptake and release of gliotransmitters, ions, and other substances. Polyamines, stored in astrocytes, act as gliotransmitters and can modulate excitatory and inhibitory signaling. This study demonstrates that astrocytic polyamine spermine contributes to network excitation and its inhibition prevents seizure generation. The findings suggest that modulation of astrocytic polyamine levels may lead to the development of more effective antiepileptic drugs in the future.

Deficient astrocyte metabolism impairs glutamine synthesis and neurotransmitter homeostasis in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Jens Andersen et al.

Summary: This study found that in Alzheimer's disease (AD), there is prominent neuronal hypometabolism in the hippocampal slices of affected mice, while a reduction in glutamine synthesis in astrocytes directly impedes neuronal GABA synthesis.

1H Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Understand the Biological Basis of ALS, Diagnose Patients Earlier, and Monitor Disease Progression

Sarah Caldwell et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of H-1-MRS technology in identifying specific biomarkers for ALS and monitoring disease progression. The findings suggest that an increase in neuronal glutamate concentration and a decrease in GABA levels may be specific pathophysiological features of ALS, which could enhance the specificity of H-1-MRS detection and monitoring of ALS progression. Additional longitudinal studies are needed to further validate these findings and understand changes in ratios over time.
