This study describes the synthesis of dicarboxylic acids based ionic liquids containing TMG cation by a facile neutralization reaction, and their application as lubricant additives for tribological study. The resulted ILs showed significant reduction in both friction and wear for a steel-steel interface in polyol base oil.
The present work described the synthesis of dicarboxylic acids based ionic liquids containing 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium (TMG) cation by a facile neutralization reaction. The resulted ionic liquids (ILs) were used for the first time as lubricant additives for tribological study and displayed a significant reduction in both friction and wear in polyol base oil for a steel-steel interface. Among the four synthe-sized ILs having different dicarboxylic acids like dodecanoic acid (DodA), sebacic acid (SebA), suberic acid (SubA) and adipic acid (AdiA) at the optimum additive dose (0.05%), a maximum reduction of 55% was observed for IL having tetramethylguanidinium cation with suberic acid[TMG][SubA] and the maximum wear reduction of 58% observed for IL [TMG][Dod]. The improved tribo-properties of IL blends are attrib-uted to the generation of a boundary lubrication film by the tribochemical reaction between the mole-cules of ILs and metal atoms/oxides of interacting surfaces.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V.
