Carbon nanodots for enhanced oil recovery in carbonate reservoirs

Sivabalan Sakthivel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the EOR potential of Carbon nanodots (CNDs) in coreflood experiments, which shows that CNDs have excellent colloidal stability and mobility in carbonate reservoirs and are more effective at increasing oil recovery compared to GS8 at the same dilute concentration.

Spontaneous imbibition characteristics of carbon nanofluids in carbonate reservoirs

Sivabalan Sakthivel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of CND and GS8 in altering wettability at low concentrations, with both additives leading to about 22%-25% incremental oil recovery when used in seawater. CND showed a strong positive effect on wettability across all samples, making it a strong candidate for EOR, while GS8 was most efficient in macropores but less so in mesopores and micropores. Rock-oil-brine contact angle and interfacial tension measurements supported the findings and suggested CND as a viable and economical alternative in harsh carbonate reservoir environments.
