Coverage-dependent adsorption of H2O on dicalcium silicate (100) surface: A DFT study

Chongchong Qi et al.

Summary: This study used first-principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations to analyze the adsorption of water molecules on C2S surfaces. The results showed that the adsorption energy increased with the number of adsorbed water molecules, and multi-water molecules adsorption was generally anti-cooperative. Electrons were transferred from the surface to water molecules after adsorption, and water molecules became more stable upon adsorption.

Adsorption of hydrated Al3+ on the kaolinite (001) surface: A density functional theory study

Yuqi Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of hydrated aluminum ions (Al3+) on kaolinite surface using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that hydrated aluminum ions preferentially form stable bidentate adsorption complexes on the kaolinite surface, and the Al-Os bond exhibits strong ionicity and bond filling characteristics.

Study on the enhancement mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite sulfidation with coordination chemistry and first-principles calculations

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, coordination chemistry analysis and first-principles calculations were used to investigate the enhancement mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite sulfidation. The results showed that the reactivity of the Pb ion modified smithsonite surface increased due to the strong interaction between Pb ion and HS, and the stronger bonding of Pb-S compared to Zn-S. Additionally, HS was found to be more likely to break through the hydrated layer on Pb ion modified smithsonite surface. These findings shed new light on the enhancement mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite sulfidation.

Initial hydration process of calcium silicates in Portland cement: A comprehensive comparison from molecular dynamics simulations

Chongchong Qi et al.

Summary: A comprehensive comparison of the initial hydration process of calcium silicates, namely dicalcium silicate (C2S) and tricalcium silicate (C3S), was conducted using molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that the hydration of M-3-C3S was more evident than beta-C2S, possibly due to the coordination number of the surface Ca atoms. Interactions between cement surfaces and water molecules were mainly characterized by solid O-H bonding and Ca-water O bonding.

DFT insights into the sulfidation mechanism of Fe-impurity smithsonite

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: The presence of Fe impurities significantly altered the structure and electronic properties of smithsonite surfaces, affecting the sulfidation-flotation process. The adsorption energy of HS on Fe-bearing smithsonite surfaces was lower than on perfect surfaces, and the presence of S-OH in the sulfidation product decreased the hydrophobicity of the sulfidation film, which was not conducive to sulfidation-flotation.
