Thermally reconfigurable monoclinic nematic colloidal fluids

Haridas Mundoor et al.

Summary: By dispersing highly anisotropic charged colloidal disks in a nematic liquid crystal, various low-symmetry phases are observed, including monoclinic colloidal nematic order, with transitions between them achieved through variations in temperature, concentration, and surface charge.

How chains and rings affect the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of a highly clustered ferrofluid

Philip J. Camp et al.

Summary: The study examines the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of a model ferrofluid at very low concentration and different dipolar coupling constants using Brownian dynamics simulations. As the coupling constant lambda increases, the structural motifs in the system change, leading to qualitative changes in the static susceptibility and frequency spectrum. Different features are observed in the spectrum at different lambda values, with peak frequencies corresponding to intracluster motions accurately computed using a simple theory.

Anisotropic electrostatic screening of charged colloids in nematic solvents

Jeffrey C. Everts et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates anisotropic electrostatic screening for charged colloidal particles in a nematic electrolyte, showing that material anisotropy behaves differently from particle anisotropy. The research explores the effects of anisotropic screening on charged near-spherical colloidal particles in a nematic medium, revealing competing anisotropic elastic and electrostatic effective pair interactions. Overall, the work contributes to the understanding of electrostatic screening in nematic anisotropic media.
