Structural basis for the SUMO protease activity of the atypical ubiquitin-specific protease USPL1

Summary: USPL1 is a non-canonical member of the ubiquitin-specific protease (USP) family with activity toward SUMO instead of ubiquitin. Here, the authors present a crystal structure of USPL1 bound to SUMO2, revealing how this enzyme has evolved to bind SUMO as an example of divergent evolution in the USP family.
