Tailored design of nanofiltration membranes for water treatment based on synthesis-property-performance relationships

Kunpeng Wang et al.

Summary: Progress has been made in tailored design of NF membranes by optimizing interfacial polymerization techniques, adopting new manufacturing processes and materials. The property-performance relationships based on solvent/solute mass transfer theories and mathematical models have been discussed, along with conclusions on membrane structural and physicochemical parameter regulation to improve membrane separation performance, as well as existing and potential applications of NF membranes in water treatment processes. Challenges and prospects of tailored design of NF membranes for water treatment applications are also highlighted.

Effect of synthesis conditions on the non-uniformity of nanofiltration membrane pore size distribution

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: The uniformity of membrane pore sizes significantly affects the rejection performance of nanofiltration membranes. This study investigated the determination methods of membrane pore size and uniformity for lab-made NF membranes, finding that high piperazine concentration and curing temperature can enhance pore size uniformity. The log-normal distribution method is more direct in characterizing pore size uniformity.

Tweak in Puzzle: Tailoring Membrane Chemistry and Structure toward Targeted Removal of Organic Micropollutants for Water Reuse

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: Membrane-based water reuse through reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) faces a critical challenge from organic micropollutants (OMPs). Conventional polyamide RO and NF membranes often lack adequate selectivity to achieve sufficient removal of toxic and harmful OMPs in water. This review critically analyzes the roles of membrane chemistry and structure on the removal of OMPs and highlights opportunities and strategies toward more selective removal of OMPs in the context of water reuse.

Exploitation of Amine Groups Cooped up in Polyamide Nanofiltration Membranes to Achieve High Rejection of Micropollutants and High Permeance of Divalent Cations

Yawei Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method was developed to fabricate nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) with small pore dimensions coupled with a high, net-negative charge density. The membranes exhibited a low molecular cutoff, reduced rejection of MgCl2, and competitive water permeance, making them ideal for the efficient removal of micropollutants while preserving mineral ions in the production of safe, quality drinking water. The significance of residual amine groups and the modification environment in membrane fabrication was unveiled, providing insights into the electrostatic effects constrained by size exclusion.

Loose nanofiltration membrane custom-tailored for resource recovery

Shiwei Guo et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the development and applications of the emerging loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane in resource recovery from biomass and wastewater. LNF membranes, with higher selectivity and lower operating pressure, are mainly prepared through phase inversion and interfacial polymerization, and are applied for the separation of saccharides, polyphenols, pigments, dyes, and salts to minimize environmental pollution.

Fit-for-Purpose Design of Nanofiltration Membranes for Simultaneous Nutrient Recovery and Micropollutant Removal

Yangying Zhao et al.

Summary: A novel thin-film composite polyamide membrane was designed for highly selective nanofiltration to remove micropollutants and preserve valuable nutrients in domestic wastewater. By tuning membrane pore size, distribution, and surface charge, it achieved desirable solute-solute selectivity. The study highlights the potential of designing solute-selective NF membranes for improved flexibility in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
