Novel catalytic self-cleaning membrane with peroxymonosulfate activation for dual-function wastewater purification: Performance and mechanism

Binghong Chen et al.

Summary: This study developed a dual-function catalytic self-cleaning membrane for water treatment by preparing MnO2/C-CNT composites and MnO2/C-CNT@PVDF membrane. The composite exhibited excellent degradation performance for dyes, and the membrane showed remarkable filtration catalytic activity and stability, as well as high permeation flux and separation efficiency. The modified membrane could achieve one-step catalytic degradation of dyes and oil/water separation, and it also demonstrated brilliant self-cleaning performance.

Fundamental thermodynamic mechanisms of membrane fouling caused by transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in water treatment

Zhenxiang Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fouling characteristics of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) under different Ca2+ concentrations and reveals the underlying mechanisms. The results show that TEP content increases with Ca2+ concentration, and TEP's specific filtration resistance (SFR) reaches its peak at a Ca2+ concentration of 1 mM. Microstructure transformation of TEP particles and differences in adhesion ability are identified as the main contributors to the resistance variations of TEP solution.

Effects of polysaccharides' molecular structure on membrane fouling and the related mechanisms

Bizhen Zeng et al.

Summary: This study explored the thermodynamic fouling mechanisms of polysaccharides with different structures. The results showed that xanthan gum solution exhibited a more rapid flux decline trend and higher specific filtration resistance compared to carrageenan. Xanthan gum had a more disordered structure and higher viscosity, while carrageenan had a branch structure. The gel layer of xanthan gum had a more homogeneous structure and rigid polymer backbone, facilitating gel formation with water.

Mechanistic insights into Ca-alginate gel-associated membrane fouling affected by ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)

Zhenxiang Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of EDTA on fouling caused by transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), revealing that EDTA can change the microstructure of TEP and consequently impact the fouling behavior. Initial addition of EDTA reduces the specific filtration resistance of TEP, but continuous addition increases it. The findings highlight the thermodynamic mechanism of EDTA-induced TEP fouling and emphasize the importance of EDTA dosage and pH adjustment in controlling TEP fouling.
