Employing a green cross-linking method to fabricate polybenzimidazole (PBI) hollow fiber membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN)

Baiwang Zhao et al.

Summary: A solvent resistant polybenzimidazole (PBI) hollow fiber membrane was designed and cross-linked with a K2S2O8 aqueous solution, significantly improving membrane stability and mechanical properties. The cross-linked PBI hollow fiber membrane showed high rejection rates for Rose Bengal in acetone, making it suitable for solvent resistant nanofiltration applications. Recommendations include a module configuration where one end of the hollow fibers is free from the module housing to mitigate damage from membrane swelling during organic filtration.

Recent developments in the preparation of improved nanofiltration membranes for extreme pH conditions

Gerrald Bargeman

Summary: Commercially available nanofiltration membranes often show limited stability at extreme pH conditions, leading to the need for further research and development to improve pH stable NF membranes with a range of molecular weight cut-offs. Recent developments include the use of interfacial polymerization to produce thin film composite membranes, but there is still room for improvement in order to meet the performance characteristics of the best commercially available NF membranes.

A nanofiltration membrane fabricated on a surfactant activated substrate with improved separation performance and acid resistance

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: An acid-resistant nanofiltration membrane with high permeability and rejection was prepared through interfacial polymerization assisted by surfactants. The addition of surfactants, particularly SDS, significantly affected the membrane performance. The presence of SDS on the membrane surface improved the retention of PEI during membrane preparation, influencing the morphology and cross-linking degree of the membrane, ultimately affecting its performance and acid resistance.
