Printed graphene oxide-based membranes for gas separation and carbon capture

Fanglei Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a fast and scalable method using co-solvent ink-jet printing was successfully employed to prepare large-area, ultrathin, high-quality GO membranes for gas separation applications. The printed GO membrane demonstrated selective transport for hydrogen and helium over carbon dioxide and nitrogen, showing great potential for large-scale production of GO-based gas separation membranes and versatile use of other 2-dimensional materials for membrane applications.

Superior CO2/N2 separation performance of highly branched Poly(1,3 dioxolane) plasticized by polyethylene glycol

Wenji Guo et al.

Summary: By plasticizing poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDXLA) with miscible polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based additives, the CO2/N-2 separation properties of PDXLA can be further enhanced. The effects of the additives' properties and loading level on the physical properties of the blends are investigated, and a model is used to explain the effects on gas transport properties. The resulting sample shows excellent CO2/N-2 separation performance when challenged with a model flue gas at 60 degrees C, surpassing the previous upper bound.

Design of interchain hydrogen bond in polyimide membrane for improved gas selectivity and membrane stability

Shanshan Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a strong hydrogen bond among polymer chains of 6FDA-durene polyimide (Du-PI) membranes was designed by introducing isophthalic dihydrazide (IPD) molecules as a cross-linker, which significantly increased the membrane's mechanical strength, anti-plasticization property, and gas permselectivity. The use of IPD as a cross-linker was shown to be a facile and effective strategy to enhance the inter-polymer chain interaction and improve membrane stability in a mild way.

Scaling-up defect-free asymmetric hollow fiber membranes to produce oxygen-enriched gas for integration into municipal solid waste gasification process

Chong Yang Chuah et al.

Summary: Municipal solid waste gasification technology has great potential for waste-to-energy conversion, but the quality of produced syngas is a key challenge. Using oxygen-enriched gas can improve syngas quality, but it is costly. This study successfully demonstrated the use of a specialized hollow fiber membrane to produce oxygen-enriched gas for enhancing syngas quality.

High-performance porous carbon-zeolite mixed-matrix membranes for CO2/N2 separation

Chong Yang Chuah et al.

Summary: Nano-sized PS-MFI, ETS-10 and SAPO-34 zeolites were used as CO2-selective fillers in high-performance mixed-matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes for CO2/N-2 separation. The in-house polyimide precursor ODPA-TMPDA was employed for the membranes, leading to improved gas permeability. Zeolite-filled CMSMs showed enhanced CO2 permeability and selectivity, especially with SAPO-34 outperforming the Robeson upper bound for CO2/N-2 separation.
