Core-shell structured polyaniline/polypyrrole composites promoted methane production from anaerobic sludge

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the core-shell structured PPy@PANI has good performance in enhancing methane production from anaerobic wastewater treatment, with significant improvements in methane production rate and yield. The optimal dosage was found to be 0.6 g/L, which resulted in a high methane production rate. The mechanisms behind the enhanced methane production rate were attributed to PPy@PANI enriching functional microorganisms and enhancing organic degradation and electron transfer.

Impacts of bio-carriers on the characteristics of cake layer and membrane fouling in a novel hybrid membrane bioreactor for treating mariculture wastewater

Jing Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of bio-carriers on membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for high saline mariculture wastewater treatment. The results showed that bio-carriers effectively improved the characteristics of cake layer, reduced the adhesion of proteins and humic acid-like materials on membrane surface, and shifted the precise composition of cake layers.

Roles of initial bacterial attachment and growth in the biofouling development on the microfiltration membrane: From viewpoints of individual cell and interfacial interaction energy

Zi Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated bacterial adhesion and growth behaviors on PVDF microfiltration membrane during biofouling development, showing that biomass abundance is crucial for biofouling occurrence. Bacteria growth on membrane surface followed a pseudo second-order kinetic equation and was mainly influenced by substrate concentration in the feeding. Interfacial energy decreased continuously between membrane and bacteria, impacting adhesion behavior, with potential for guidance on biofouling mitigation and control for membrane filtration.

Confinement Capillarity of Thin Coating for Boosting Solar-Driven Water Evaporation

Zhenxing Wang et al.

Summary: Using confinement capillarity on porous sponge with photothermal thin coating is an effective way to enhance solar-driven water evaporation rate. The formation of ultrathin water layer can increase evaporation area and prevent excessive water heating, significantly improving the rate of solar steam generation. Photothermal materials with confinement capillarity possess high evaporation rate and anti-salt-accumulation property.

Investigating the stability of electrically conductive membranes

Mohamad Amin Halali et al.

Summary: In this study, electrically conductive membranes (ECMs) were successfully synthesized by coating polyethersulfone membranes with carbon nanotubes and using two different crosslinkers. The stability of ECMs under different conditions was investigated, revealing that ECMs crosslinked with glutaraldehyde showed higher electrochemical stability under cathodic potential. Additionally, PVA as a crosslinker faced challenges in maintaining stability of CNTs under concentration polarization conditions.

Facile pyrrole oxidative polymerization with ionic liquid to modify ceramic membrane for sustainable fouling control

Qi Shen et al.

Summary: This study modified ceramic membrane through oxidative polymerization to enhance its conductivity and hydrophilicity, effectively reducing fouling in an electric CMBR system. The modified BVIMBF4-CM showed high rejection efficiency for various substances and demonstrated improved antifouling capability under the influence of an electric field. The new modification method proposed in this study has the potential to be a reliable solution for implementing antifouling E-CMBR systems in wastewater treatment.
