Accessing greater thickness and new morphology features in polyamide active layers of thin-film composite membranes by reducing restrictions in amine monomer supply

Kasia Grzebyk et al.

Summary: This study found that reducing restrictions on the supply conditions of m-phenylenediamine (MPD) can increase the thickness of the polyamide active layer and result in a more prominent void structure. This observation is consistent with recent literature describing the role of CO2 degassing and nanobubble confinement in the development of the polyamide active layer morphology.

Salt and Water Transport in Reverse Osmosis Membranes: Beyond the Solution-Diffusion Model

Li Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the salt-water separation mechanisms of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is critical for the further development and optimization of RO technology. In this study, a solution-friction model is developed to describe the intricate transport mechanisms of water molecules and ions through the membrane. Experimental measurements validate the model, showing strong dependence of salt permeability on feed salt concentration and applied pressure, in stark contrast to the widely used solution-diffusion (SD) model.

A novel method for the accurate characterization of transport and structural parameters of deformable membranes utilized in pressure- and osmotically driven membrane processes

Christian D. Peters et al.

Summary: Membrane deformation in pressurized membrane processes can affect membrane transport and structural characteristics, leading to lower process performance. Accurate characterization of the membrane is essential for optimizing design and operation. A novel membrane characterization method, the integrated two-stage ABS method, provides more accurate predictions of membrane properties compared to the widely used RO-FO method.

Effect of Feed Water pH on the Partitioning of Alkali Metal Salts from Aqueous Phase into the Polyamide Active Layers of Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Jingbo Wang et al.

Summary: Through experimental studies, it was found that the effects of different pH values on the partitioning and rejection of alkali metal salts were relatively consistent, indicating that Donnan theory could effectively predict the impact of feed solution pH on salt partitioning and rejection.
