Apoptosis and immunophenotyping of peripheral blood lymphocytes in Iranian COVID-19 patients: Clinical and laboratory characteristics

Saeid Taghiloo et al.

Summary: A novel human coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has been identified in China and spread globally, with studies showing a decrease in peripheral blood lymphocytes in most patients. This study in Iranian COVID-19 patients revealed decreased lymphocyte subsets compared to controls, particularly in severe cases. The increase in apoptosis of mononuclear cells in COVID-19 patients, especially in severe cases, suggests potential biomarkers for severity and prognosis.

Dynamic changes in lymphocyte subsets and parallel cytokine levels in patients with severe and critical COVID-19

Yangli Liu et al.

Summary: A sustained decrease in lymphocyte subsets, especially CD4(+) T cells and NK cells, interacting with proinflammatory cytokine storms was associated with severe disease and poor prognosis in COVID-19.

Lymphocyte subsets early predict mortality in a large series of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Spain

S. Cantenys-Molina et al.

Summary: In this Spanish series, decreased counts of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells with an increase in NK lymphocytes at admission were prognostic factors of death in COVID-19 patients. Even in patients with normal or mildly reduced levels of lymphocytes, imbalanced lymphocyte subpopulations were early indicators of in-hospital mortality.

T cell immunobiology and cytokine storm of COVID-19

Xiao-Hua Luo et al.

Summary: Severe cases of COVID-19 show T cell deficiency and increased neutrophils, but T cell counts gradually recover in survivors. Specific cytokines and the status of T cells may influence the treatment outcomes of COVID-19. Therapies targeting IR and CS may help control the disease progression.

Rapid review of COVID-19 epidemic estimation studies for Iran

Farshad Pourmalek et al.

Summary: The study reviewed methodology and results of COVID-19 epidemic estimation studies in Iran, finding a wide variation in predicted outcomes among different models. It also suggested that increasing mask usage to 95% could potentially prevent a significant number of additional deaths.

Immune Profile in Patients With COVID-19: Lymphocytes Exhaustion Markers in Relationship to Clinical Outcome

Anna Bobcakova et al.

Summary: Immune parameters such as lymphocyte depletion and exhaustion of immune cell subsets can help predict the outcomes and severity of COVID-19. Certain markers like CD38 and PD-1 expression levels on specific immune cells may serve as potential biomarkers for poor outcomes in patients with COVID-19.
