Glyco-nanoparticles: New drug delivery systems in cancer therapy

Haroon Khan et al.

Summary: The application of nanotechnology has led to the development of effective nanosized drug delivery systems which are highly selective for tumors and allow a slow release of active anticancer agents. Carbohydrate-functionalized nanomaterials, with their multi-valent binding capacities and desirable biocompatibility, have attracted considerable attention as an excellent candidate for controlled release of therapeutic agents. These carbohydrate-functionalized nano-carriers are also compatible with construction of intracellular delivery platforms.

Progress and prospects in chitosan derivatives: Modification strategies and medical applications

Sheng Ding et al.

Summary: Chitosan is a natural alkaline polysaccharide derived from marine organisms with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and good water solubility. However, its poor solubility under physiological conditions limits its applications, thus systematic summarization of modification strategies for CS derivatives is highly necessary. Current research has improved the properties of CS derivatives through chemical reactions and physical integration, providing more possibilities for medical applications.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
