Role of alkalis on the incorporation of iodine in simple borosilicate glasses

Boris Venague et al.

Summary: Investigated the influence of alkali elements on the incorporation mechanisms and incorporation limit of iodine in borosilicate glasses used for nuclear waste immobilization. Found that high alkali content and high concentrations of Na2O are particularly favorable for iodine incorporation.

The influence of iodide on glass transition temperature of high-pressure nuclear waste glasses

Valentin Jolivet et al.

Summary: The glass transition temperature (T-g) was investigated for borosilicate glasses used in nuclear waste immobilization with different levels of iodine (I) added. The results showed that the addition of I decreased T-g, with a stronger effect observed in ISG compared to NH glass compositions. The difference in T-g decrease was attributed to the dissolution mechanism of I and its impact on the boron network polymerization.

Chemical durability evaluation of silver phosphate?based glasses designed for the conditioning of radioactive iodine

A-L Chabauty et al.

Summary: Silver phosphate glasses were studied for conditioning of radioactive iodine 129, with Nb2O5 and Bi2O3 as crosslinking agents. The impact of these modifications on glass chemical durability, especially the addition of Nb2O5, was significant in reducing phosphorus release rates and forming a passivating layer in long-term alteration tests. The results suggest that elemental release in solution alone may underestimate alteration rates, emphasizing the importance of considering different elements in glass composition.

Summary: The study investigated the possibility of dissolving iodine in borosilicate glasses using high-pressure synthesis, finding that I predominantly dissolves as iodide and using XPS and XAS methods to determine the speciation and surroundings of I. The results suggest that the borosilicate network is affected by the dissolution of I.

Immobilization of 129I in nuclear waste glass matrixes synthesized under high-pressure conditions: an experimental study

Yann Morizet et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of high-pressure synthesis to enhance the solubility of I in aluminoborosilicate glasses, providing a potential solution for the immobilization of I-129 in nuclear waste. The research demonstrates that high-pressure conditions significantly increase the I solubility in glasses, particularly in Na-rich compositions, and oxidized I waste form should be utilized to further improve I solubility.
