Micromechanical properties of vapour-exposed SiCf/BN/SiC ceramic-matrix composites

Robin M. G. De Meyere et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interphase stability and mechanical properties of SiCf/BN/SiC ceramic-matrix composites after exposure to low-temperature water vapor. The results showed a decrease in interfacial shear strengths with longer exposure time and an impact on permeability.

Influence of Texture and Thickness of Pyrocarbon Coatings as Interphase on the Mechanical Behavior of Specific 2.5D SiC/SiC Composites Reinforced with Hi-Nicalon S Fibers

Emilien Buet et al.

Summary: In the development of SiC/SiC composite for nuclear applications, the influence of pyrocarbon interphase texture and thickness on mechanical behavior is investigated. The study reveals that the nature of pyrocarbon directly affects interfacial shear stress and failure mode, regardless of the pyrocarbon thickness within the range studied.

Tunable strength of SiCf/β-Yb2Si2O7 interface for different requirements in SiCf/SiC CMC: Inspiration from model composite investigation

Xirui Lv et al.

Summary: Model composites with tunable SiCf/Yb2Si2O7 interfaces were processed by Spark Plasma Sintering, achieving weak and strong interfaces at different sintering temperatures. Different debonding mechanisms were observed in indentation crack test, with weak interfaces showing crack deflection and low debond energy compared to strong interfaces. The strong interface demonstrated high debond energy and crack penetration, promising improved performance under higher combustion temperature. Adjusting interfacial strength or debond energy could optimize the mechanical fuse mechanism in SiCf/SiC CMC.

Oxidation/corrosion of BN-based coatings as prospective interphases for SiC/SiC composites

Paul Carminati et al.

Summary: The oxidation/corrosion behavior of SiC-based fibres and BN matrices with an interphase coating is crucial in determining the service life of ceramic matrix composites used as structural parts in aircraft engines. The presence of aluminium in the BN coating improves protection at high temperatures by forming alumina combined with borosilicate, whereas thin layers of pure BN exhibit reduced recession due to the formation of a sealing borosilicate phase at lower temperatures.

Summary: This study investigates the interfacial mechanical properties of SiC fiber-reinforced SiC composites using micropillar compression testing, revealing significant influences of PyC layer thickness, local bonding mechanism of the PyC interphase on the SiC fiber surface, and fiber surface roughness on the interfacial properties and debond mechanisms. Additionally, the micropillar compression technique uncovers new understandings of PyC interface properties and provides insights into the macroscopic mechanical properties of neutron-irradiated SiC composites.

Summary: The study investigated the interfacial shear strength of the BN interphase in SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites by varying fiber types and interlayer thicknesses, finding that roughness and local fiber environment play a significant role in the measured interfacial shear strength when the interphase thickness exceeds 200 nm.

Mode I and Mode II interfacial fracture energy of SiC/BN/SiC CMCs

Oriol Gavalda-Diaz et al.

Summary: In this study, stable interfacial crack propagation in SiC/BN/SiC CMCs was achieved using in situ micromechanical testing in the scanning electron microscope. The critical energy release rate of the BN-fiber interface in Mode I and II was found to be lower than that of the fiber, explaining the generalized fiber debonding observed in the fracture of these CMCs. This work highlights possible routes for the optimization and modeling of the new generation of CMC interphases.
