Full Length Article Gradient structure induced simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in AZ31 Mg alloy with twin-twin interactions

Qinghui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of gradient structure on deformation twin evolution and resulting performance improvements. The experiment was conducted using a gradient-structured magnesium alloy. The results show that the architected alloy exhibits simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility, which is attributed to abundant twin-twin interactions contributing to increased work-hardening capability.

Laser shock peened Ti-6Al-4 V alloy: Experiments and modeling

Jianfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Systematic characterization of microstructure, mechanical testing and constitutive modeling were conducted to investigate the effects of laser shock peening (LSP) treatment on the tensile properties of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy. The study revealed that LSP treatment resulted in grain refinement and introduction of compressive residual stress, leading to changes in the material's elastic-plastic behavior. The established deformation mechanism-based model showed that surface grain refinement enhanced initial yielding and strain hardening, while residual stress had a weakening effect on initial yielding but little influence on strain hardening behavior.

Dynamic behavior and adiabatic shearing formation of the commercially pure titanium with explosion-induced gradient microstructure

Yansong Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, commercially pure titanium was subjected to explosion hardening to create a gradient microstructure. The results showed that explosion hardening induced a gradient hardened microstructure in CP titanium and enhanced both static and dynamic compressive strengths. The gradient deformation and adiabatic shear band were observed in the explosion hardened specimen after dynamic loading, while the untreated specimen showed homogeneous deformation and a bipyramid-shaped adiabatic shear band. The gradient microstructure in CP titanium with explosion hardening delayed the propagation of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) and cracks under dynamic loading.

Shock-induced large-depth gradient microstructure in commercial pure titanium subjected to explosive hardening

Yansong Guo et al.

Summary: Explosive hardening of commercial pure titanium plate resulted in a large-depth gradient hardness distribution, with an ultra-hardened layer and a sub-hardened layer exhibiting different gradient microstructures. The hardness increase in the ultra-hardened layer was mainly attributed to grain refinement/a-x phase transition, while the hardness increase in the sub-hardened layer was mainly caused by high-density dislocation/twining. The formation mechanism of gradient microstructures and grain refinement mechanism were discussed in detail.

Role of Microstructure on the Shock-Induced Strengthening Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

Yu Ren et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the effect of microstructure on the shock-induced strengthening behavior of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64) alloy. Results showed that the bimodal microstructure with high equiaxed primary alpha-phase and wide alpha platelets had a higher shock-induced enhancement ratio, leading to the formation of reticular substructures and slip bands. In contrast, a lamellar microstructure with wide alpha platelets showed a lower number of twins formed under shock loading conditions, indicating the influence of grain size and interface damping on twinning behavior.

Effect of dynamic recrystallization on texture orientation and grain refinement of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy subjected to laser shock peening

Xinlei Pan et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigated the DRX mechanism and its effects on grain refinement in Ti6Al4V titanium alloy subjected to LSP using EBSD and TEM characterization. The results showed that the DRX mechanism induced by shear bands played a vital role in texture transition and grain refinement during LSP.

The nature of the maximum microhardness and thickness of the gradient layer in surface-strengthened Cu-Al alloys

C. X. Ren et al.

Summary: The research found that the maximum microhardness in the gradient layer of 3S Cu-Al alloys mainly depends on the chemical composition, while the thickness of the gradient layer primarily depends on the strength and work-hardening capacity, both of which are closely related to the microstructure.
