Comparative analysis of thermal aging behavior and comprehensive performance of high viscosity asphalt (HVA) from cohesion, adhesion and rheology perspectives

Jianhua Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the change behaviors of high viscosity asphalt (HVA) under different thermal aging conditions. The results show that aging reduces the cohesion, adhesion, and water stability of the asphalt binders. However, the effect of aging on viscoelastic properties, temperature sensitivity, and rutting resistance is inconsistent compared to other types of asphalt. Aging also decreases the microscopic surface roughness and alters the intensity of functional groups. Grey correlation analysis reveals the relationship between microscopic and macroscopic properties, while radar chart analysis evaluates the comprehensive performance of HVA at different aging stages.

Relationship between colloidal index and chemo-rheological properties of asphalt binders modified by various recycling agents

Hamzeh F. Haghshenas et al.

Summary: This study found that recycling agents can affect the softening and long-term performance of modified binders, but only a few can restore the rheological properties of binders. Experimental results show a strong linear relationship between the colloidal index and the chemo-rheological properties of binders.

Analysis of the chemical properties and high-temperature rheological properties of MDI modified bio-asphalt

Linlong Shao et al.

Summary: In this study, MDI was used as a chemical modifier to improve the high temperature rheological properties of bio-asphalt. The addition of MDI increased the content of macromolecular polymers in the bio-asphalt through a nucleophilic addition reaction. The MDI modifier effectively enhanced the permanent non-deformability of the bio-asphalt.

Mechanical properties and reaction mechanism of microwave-activated crumb rubber-modified asphalt before and after thermal aging

Lei Yin et al.

Summary: The anti-aging properties and mechanism of microwave-activated crumb rubber-modified asphalt (ACRMA) were evaluated in this study. It was found that ACRMA exhibited better high-temperature performance and permanent deformation resistance than CRMA after aging. The anti-aging performance of ACRMA was better than that of CRMA.

The influence of SBS modification on the rheological property of asphalt before and after regeneration

Naitian Zhang et al.

Summary: This article explores the aging process of SBS modified asphalt, the influence of chemical components on rheological properties, and the effects of regeneration agents. It was found that as the aging degree increased, the complex modulus and creep rate of asphalt decreased while the creep stiffness modulus increased. The addition of regeneration agents led to opposite changes in rheological properties and characteristic functional groups compared to aging asphalt. Grey relational analysis showed that carbonyl had the most significant impact on high-temperature rheology properties, followed by sulfoxide and butadiene.

Analysis of asphaltenes and maltenes before and after long-term aging of bitumen

Xiaohu Lu et al.

Summary: The study shows differences in asphaltene and maltene of bitumen before and after aging, including the presence of more wax in maltene, the transfer of carbonyl and sulfoxide signals, and differences in aromaticity. The major differences are found between asphaltene and maltene in the bitumen.

Influence of anti-ageing compounds on rheological properties of bitumen

Yangming Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different anti-ageing compounds on bitumen, finding that certain combinations significantly improved oxidative stability and resistance to fatigue cracking. Rheological analysis showed AAC-modified bitumen samples exhibited non-Newtonian characteristics, and the addition of NaMMT nanofiller enhanced rutting resistance in aged bitumen samples compared to Irganox acid:furfural combination.

Influence of warm mix additives on the low-temperature behavior of bitumen using the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR)

Anda Ligia Belc et al.

Summary: The mechanical and rheological characteristics of bitumen play a crucial role in the behavior and durability of bituminous road layers. Different additives have varying effects on the workability of asphalt mixtures, especially in terms of low temperature susceptibility, with waxes having the biggest influence on bitumen properties. Tests on bituminous mastic show that the limit temperature increases with the addition of filler in the blends.

Study on the microscopic characteristics and rheological properties of thermal-oxidative aged and virgin-old recycled asphalts

Yue Qin et al.

Summary: The study found that thermal-oxidative aging deteriorates the fluidity and performance stability of asphalt, while adding fresh asphalt can slow down the aging process. The increase in viscosity of asphalt is mainly attributed to the increase in asphalt macromolecules weight, and a reduction in the proportion of the dispersion medium decreases the fatigue resistance potential of asphalt.

Effect of Waterborne Epoxy Resin on Properties of Modified Emulsified Asphalt and Its Microstructure

Panpan Wang et al.

Summary: This research studied the influence of waterborne epoxy resin on emulsified asphalt properties and microstructure, finding that the addition of waterborne epoxy resin improved high-temperature performance and bond behavior of modified emulsified asphalt. However, its low-temperature performance deteriorated. The microstructure analysis revealed that a 10% content of waterborne epoxy resin led to a more evenly distributed resin throughout the modified emulsified asphalt, resulting in superior comprehensive properties compared to neat asphalt and emulsified asphalt.
