Expansive and Diverse Phenotypic Landscape of Field Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae with Differential Susceptibility to Temephos: Beyond Metabolic Detoxification

Jasmine Morgan et al.

Summary: Arboviruses like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya pose significant global public health risks, with control efforts relying on insecticides targeting Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. However, widespread insecticide resistance threatens the success of these control methods. This study identified unique gene expression profiles in Ae. aegypti larvae from different Colombian cities, highlighting the importance of considering geographic variations in vector control strategies. Additionally, the research revealed new potential targets for combating insecticide resistance in mosquitoes and expanded our understanding of the complex phenotypic responses of Ae. aegypti to insecticides.

Insecticide exposure affects intergenerational patterns of DNA methylation in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata

Kristian Brevik et al.

Summary: Insecticide use is a prevalent selective force in modern agroecosystems, leading to rapid evolution of resistance in insect herbivores. Exposure to sublethal doses of insecticides may trigger heritable changes in DNA methylation, potentially facilitating the emergence of resistant phenotypes. This study on the Colorado potato beetle found that insecticide exposure resulted in decreased global DNA methylation levels, particularly within genes associated with insecticide resistance, suggesting that epigenetics may play a role in insecticide resistance and evolution.

Molecular surveillance of resistance to pyrethroids insecticides in Colombian Aedes aegypti populations

Yurany Granada et al.

Summary: The study found that Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in different Colombian cities have developed resistance to some pyrethroid insecticides due to allelic substitutions on the voltage-gated sodium channel gene known as kdr mutations. While kdr mutations play a role in conferring low levels of resistance, other mechanisms such as metabolic enzymes also contribute to the resistance. The findings suggest that genetic surveillance of mosquito populations is essential for monitoring resistance emergence and improving disease control measures.

Summary: A strategy integrating chromatographic analysis and chemometrics was proposed for the species authentication of Curcumae Rhizoma (Ezhu), which showed that HS-GC-MS was more effective than HPLC in distinguishing different species. This study established a rapid, precise and feasible strategy for the discrimination and quality control of Ezhu with different species.
